From Blabbermouth.net: According to Melodicrock.com, JOURNEY's new studio album, entitled "Revelation", will be released in June exclusively via Wal-Mart stores. The CD will be released in a package set that will include a live DVD filmed on March 8, 2008 in Las Vegas. Rumors of a third disc in the package featuring the band's biggest hits re-recorded in late 2007 are still unconfirmed. The band featured three new songs in their Vegas set — "Wildest Dreams", "Never Walk Away" and "After All These Years". Watch video footage from the Las Vegas concert below. JOURNEY performed its first show with new singer Arnel Pineda on February 21 at the Viña del Mar International Song Festival in Viña del Mar, Chile. Arnel Pineda ("pin-eh-da") replaced Jeff Scott Soto, who parted ways with the band last year after stepping in for Steve Augeri, who had to leave the band in 2006 for medical reasons. Arnel hails from Quezon City in the Philippines and has been singing JOURNEY songs — in addition to original material — with his band, THE ZOO, for the past couple of years in clubs all over his homeland. JOURNEY has been confirmed for the Arrow Rock Festival, set to take place June 15 in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Also scheduled to appear are DEF LEPPARD, KISS, WHITESNAKE and TWISTED SISTER. Although Journey are not truly Journey without Perry, this new dude really can frickin' sing. The clips I've seen are shockingly good, and at least they're doing new material. Hopefully this will beat the 2 stinkers they did with Augeri who I liked, but the material blew chunks. Added by Linda ~ here's Amazon's listing for the album, and it does mention the bonus DVD in the description, so it's possible this won't be an exclusive Wal-Mart release after all: Two CD/DVD. 2008 brings the album [title]Revelation[/title] from Journey. Neal Schon (guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards), Ross Valory (bass), Deen Castronovo (drums)--are proud to introduce fans all over the world to their new lead singer, Arnel Pineda ('pin-eh-da'). He replaces Jeff Scott Soto, who parted ways with the band earlier this year after stepping in for Steve Augeri, who had to leave the band in 2006 for medical reasons. Disc 1 (New Material) 1. Never Walk Away 2. Like A Sunshower 3. Change For The Better 4. Wildest Dream 5. Faith In The Heartland 6. After All These Years 7. Where Did I Lose Your Love 8. What I Needed 9. What It Takes To Win 10. Turn Down The World Tonight 11. The Journey (Revelation) Disc 2 (Re-Recordings) 1. Only The Young 2. Don't Stop Believin' 3. Wheel In The Sky 4. Faithfully 5. Any Way You Want It 6. Who's Crying Now 7. Separate Ways 8. Lights 9. Open Arms 10. Be Good To Yourself 11. Stone In Love http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0018OAP7K/?tag=imwan-20

Yes, I miss Steve Perry, but I have to admit I am curious about this new incarnation and what they have to offer.
Arnel Pineda has certainly become a symbol of pride for all Filipinos.

My guess is they'll have another new singer by this time next year, if not sooner. After all, Soto was thier "it" guy until they dumped him...

I saw some clips on you tube and while the guy kind of sounds like Perry, he was straining to hit the notes.

The band was an 80's band and this is 25 years later. They are just another band hanging on by name only as far as I am concerned. I've never quite understood the anticipation of a *new* release from a band of tha era that isn't even close to being the same incarnation they enjoyed. Journey keeps trying to hire karaoke singers that sound just like Steve Perry--why not just hire Steve Perry?--that's what any Journey fan wants to see.

From Melodicrock.com:
March 11, 2008 -- A new chapter in the legendary career of multi-Platinum rockers Journey--Neal Schon (guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards), Ross Valory (bass), Deen Castronovo (drums) and Arnel Pineda (vocals)—will begin on June 3 with the highly anticipated release of Revelation, a three-disc CD and DVD package to be sold exclusively at Wal-Mart stores in North America. The first disc will consist of 11 re-recorded classics, the second is filled with 11 new songs, and the third is a live, in-concert DVD. All of the music on Revelation was produced by Kevin Shirley (who previously worked with Journey on their Platinum-certified Trial By Fire album). Journey will take Revelation on the U.S. concert trail later this July, with details to be announced in the coming weeks.
I'm curious as to the price of this 2CD/DVD set, but also about the re-recordings of old hits. Why? Why do this? I guess to show how the new guy (Pineda) can be a clone of Perry, but it's a stupid idea and it will detract from the new album. Then again, maybe that's the idea. If the price is reasonable, I'll still get it.

Re-recording the hits without Steve Perry is EVIL. Somehow it fits with the Wallymart exclusive, though............

The next thing you know, there'll be an exclusive Wal Mart box set where the entire Perry catalog is re-recorded. Vocalist to be determined.

Count me in! I guess I could put up with this version of Journey as long as I get to see Heart and Cheap Trick!

I saw Heart in 2003 and they were amazing, but the lineup has changed since then, and it's not as good, but still very worthwhile. Cheap Trick remain killer, and now I can see Journey as a curiosity factor-assuming the lawn doesn't sell out because I'll only go so far for this show.

Some really, really interesting comments from ex-Journey manager Herbie Herbert, especially on "Open Arms" and the Raised On Radio album-from Melodicrock.com:
Feature Interview: Herbie Herbert
Music Industry legend and Journey's manager from 1973-1993, Herbie Herbert has seen it all and in some cases, caused it all! He remains at the forefront of today's business thanks to pioneering concert technology that is used by hundreds of artists today such as U2, Madonna, Metallica and of course, Journey. In this interview - the single longest interview conversation I have ever done for the site, we cover it all...from the start-up days in the late 60s, the heydays of the 80s and Journey to his band Sy Klopps and onwards into the music business today. This is an interview beyond normal interviews. Herbie Herbert on the pressures of touring and performing: "The money at stake on any given night is humongous and unlike motion pictures or television you can't say freeze or let's re-tape that or can we do that over or can we shoot tomorrow or whatever. Rock 'n roll is, always has been the most intense, high pressure, and if you're in that pressure cooker and you do get involved with drugs at all, then you're very quickly weakened. And you can't cut it or if you're as clean as can be there's a high level exposure..."
Herbie on Neal Schon: "Neal Schon is the real deal...people have been very reluctant to give him his due although I think he's been incredibly influential and they just don't talk about it. And whatever, it's never been de rigueur to mention Neal Schon. I think he scares the hell out of a lot of people. Even technical people that are great players like a Steve Vai or a Joe Satriani or a Eric Johnson or you know? It's just across the board because he's just a, he has some sort of sensitivity and touch and feel and voice."
Herbie on marketing and brands: "The music today that they're using on the new Apple Ipod or the new Air [laptop] da-do-da-do-do and all of a sudden you're singing the song and that's the way it works. Familiarity creates comfort which creates a transaction. So that's what it was all about, how to cume up gross impressions of a band that is not radio friendly in a disco world. In a disco world and another thing that was very effected was the artwork at that time. Creating a unique, highly recognized imagery within your target demographic so when they see it, so by the time we got to the Escape album it did not have to say Journey on it."
Herbie on Journey re-recording their classic hits: "Sometimes this stuff gets re-recorded and is much better. It's much better. One artist and manager that took my advice and actually came to my studio to do it was Bill Thompson with the Jefferson Starship and Mickey Thomas and we took these records and these tracks and I remember one day we figured out that the average cost of each track of their greatest hits record was in excess of $150,000. Many of them were produced by guys like Ron Nevison and Peter Wolf and yadda, yadda, yadda, and I said let's come in, and I really believe in today's age with all of our new, modern recording technology, that in complete A-B comparisons we can smoke every aspect of every one of your greatest hits. Deeper, broader bandwidth, better stereo soundstage, better tuning and timing and record quality, reduce of noise floor and I mean the only thing that would be questionable is the quality of the vocal performance. If you can deliver that vocal as well or better than the original we can absolutely eclipse all the original recordings. And we did that and we did it for $15,000 for 15 songs. So when you have a second shot at it, you know like 'Boy would I like to have another whack at that.' And sometimes you can hit it out of the park."
Herbie on the band recording Open Arms: "They hate it when I tell that story about Open Arms. You know about how they were fuckin' just denigrating Steve and just talking stink. He's in there trying to sing Open Arms with Kevin Elson, Mike Stone and I'm goin' 'he's singin' his heart out, he's tryin' to nail this fuckin' thing'. I mean you know it was (whiney voice) 'Is that Perry Como, and its so frou-frou' and they're just teasing him awfully. I took Neal and Jon into the backroom and go 'What the fuck are you doin' man? He's obviously written a fantastic song.' Jon Cain goes 'He didn't write that, I wrote that.' And I was stunned. I just looked at him and my mouth dropped open, it go 'Just making your behavior all the more remarkable, unbelievable.' Sometimes man, you can write a brilliant song, (idiot voice) duhhuh, duhhuh, but if I asked you to think it might hurt you."
Herbie on Steve Perry and Raised On Radio: "I remember one time he phoned me at my house and just went nuts about Be Good To Yourself having been the first choice of a single off of Raised on Radio. And I said, it's a great song, it's a great production, it's great sound, it's Journey. That was the problem. It sounds too much like Journey. Well too many of the other songs sound too much like a glorified Steve Perry solo record. You'll have to remember on Raised on Radio is when he had me remove Ross Valory and Steve Smith from the band. Of course that was completely ridiculous and I forced him to pay them as if they were there on the tour and everything."

Schon is a tremendous player. Remember, he played with Carlos on Santana 3 at the ripe old age of 17! he has an awesome sense of melody as a lead guitarist. My all time fav NS riff is the opening guitar riff after the opening piano/vocal verse of Don't Stop Believing. As a former lead guitarist myself, that short run sends shivers every time I hear it. I tended to be more of an emotional type player (think Mick Ronson as an example), but I've always been jealous of guys like Schon that could come up with gorgeous melodies for their solos.

Geff: I play too and still do-we're finishing up a CD now, but we've always done our music for laughs in a Primus kind of way. I'm not much of a lead player, but I've always been surrounded by guys who were very good and I know guitarists very well. When it comes to Schon, he's a good one. People say he's too cocky and busy, but there are plenty of Journey songs where he lays back and picks his spots-listen to "Who's Crying Now"-a gorgeous solo, and it doesn't even appear until the end, and it's very melodic. He can also shred, and his work on the HSAS album kicked tons of ass. He's simply a brilliant player.

Simply put,its not Journey without Steve Perry. Its not Styx without Dennis DeYoung. Its not REO Speedwagon without Kevin Cronin. You get my point. Look at what the current version of the Little River Band has done--taken the heart and soul out of the original band--gutted it,really. Why can't they call themselves the LRB "Revisited?"
Sounds like I'm not the only guy here who doesn't think its Journey without Steve Perry....
