Long a Bob Dylan fan, Bryan Ferry remade "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" for his 1973 self-titled album of covers. This time around, the celebrated Roxy Music leader turns in Dylanesque, recasting 11 Dylan classics during a single live-in-the-studio week that leaves the album sounding vibrantly faithful to the original numbers. Far be it for the imaginative contrarian to retrace Dylan's steps, and sure enough--despite an omnipresent harmonica--Ferry does just the opposite. The raw rocker "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" becomes a seductive British pop song, while despair and loneliness turn into effervescence for the driving "Simple Twist of Fate." Ferry's ageless tenor injects a modern momentum into early Dylan imprints "Positively 4th Street" (with strings!), "All I Really Want to Do," and "The Times They Are A-Changing," and gloriously respects the more recent "Make You Feel My Love" (from 1997's Time out of Mind). But the best is yet to come, as the oft-covered "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" may never have received better treatment and "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down" loses not a beat of its original knock-down luster. The record closes with "All Along the Watchtower," a twin tribute to Dylan and Jimi Hendrix, the visionary for this adaptation. --Scott Holter

I've listened to this a few times and really wasn't very impressed. I typically like Bryan Ferry stuff, but this one just kind of left me feeling ho-hum about it. Check it out in the blogosphere before plunking down your money unless you just have to have it.

I'm hoping that the "covers" on the album are better than the cover of the album!

Did this get pushed back?
I originally heard March 13 as the date but now am hearing that its coming out in the summer.

Extra time to redo the artwork hopefully?

Actually, I don't think the CD is that bad. (Yes, he has done better in the past) I've been listening to it all week. And I don't object to the cover either. Different strokes...

DYLANESQUE is out now in the UK, though it does appear to have been delayed here in the US. It's not bad, though I always prefer Bryan's original music to his covers.

I do have some interest in this dvd.

But I've unfortunately noticed as I've grown older music videos tend to just sit on the shelf unwatched unless it's something really theatrical like The Tubes, or an artist that I'm totally bats over who hasn't released much on video (Mott, Bruce Cockburn, David Crosby & a FEW others). Original Roxy with Eno is one group I would be likely to actually watch.

I have a King Crimson dvd i must have bought 4-5 years ago that's never been watched all the way through & I like them!

Probably just stick with the cd for that reason.

Bryan Ferry was at J&R this afternoon, signing copies of Dylanesque. Happily, Julio (an old colleague of mine) talked me into meeting him during Jimbo Lunch to wait for an autograph. Took about 40 mins. but we finally made it to the front of the line. What a gentleman Ferry is! Nattily attired in an expensive suit and tie, he took time to shake hands with each person in line and patiently posed for photos. I managed to blurt out that "More Than This" is my favorite song ever (OK, a slight exaggeration, but it's in the Top 10) and mentioned that I'd seen Roxy Music twice since their recent reunion. Ferry's sincere reply: "Why thank you...be sure to see us again next time!" I was very impressed and glad that Julio convinced me to go. :yay:
