I used to absolutely love Marillion (I've seen 'em live 8 times) but their late 90s stuff was awful-made a nice comeback with 2004's "Marbles" which I liked, but didn't love, and now the folloup will be out in late April. Here's some details:

Description:

With 'Somewhere Else' Marillion have played to their strengths and cut one of their very best records. With their innate sense of drama and pomp tempered by a winning melancholy, Marillion have produced a set of rich and vivid soundscapes. 'Somewhere Else' is a genuinely remarkable testament to Marillion's enduring creativity and crystal vision and Pete Trewavas, Ian Mosley, Mark Kelly, Steve Rothery, and Steve Hogarth have yet again proved that they are slaves to no-one, instead being prophets calling proudly in an uncaring musical wilderness.

Song Titles:

1. The Other Half; 2. See It Like A Baby; 3. Thank You; 4. Most Toys; 5. Somewhere Else; 6. Voice From The Past; 7. No Such Thing; 8. The Wound; 9. Last Century For Man; 10. Faith

Other Info:
Label: MVD AUDIO
Running Time: 52 mins
Region Code: 0
Format: CD
# of Discs: 1

I prefer the Fish period, but I like everything they've done with both Fish & Hogarth except the awful techno Tales From The Engine Room.

I never got into Marillion. Which albums are considered essential?

"Misplaced Childhood" is one of my favorite albums of all time.

I really like all the Fish albums, but if I had to choose only 2 as essential it would be Clutching At Straws & Misplaced Childhood. Of the Hogarth cd's, I'd suggest Season's End & Afraid Of Sunlight. Many critics seem to feel that Brave is the best of the Hogarth cd's.

Wow Geff-exactly what I would've said! Clutching At Straws is absolutely amazing and was their last album to chart in the US though they reamined huge overseas. Powerful album. What songs-"Sugar Mice", "Slainte Mhath", "White Russian", "Hotel Hobbies"-whew!
Misplaced Childhood remains a masterpiece and their biggest seller everywhere (#1 in the UK)-it almost made the US Top 40 and "Kayleigh" (#2 in the UK)and "Lavender" are 2 of the greatest singles from the 80s. I had "Lavender" played at my wedding!
Seasons End is remarkable-especially being the first post-Fish album. Afraid Of Sunlight reamins the last great thing they did-all the songs deal with fallen celebrities including Kurt Cobain, Brian Wilson and OJ. Amazing and very hypnotic musically. Many songs just build and are filled with beautiful melodies-especially "Beautiful"!
Brave is a good one-but a long concept album that I've always found fascinating and flawed at the same time.
The early Fish records like Script For A Jester's Tear and Fugazi are also highly reccommended and sound very much like vintage Genesis.
Also, Marbles is a winner too.
I hope the new one is good, but I've lowered my expectations for a number of years now.
Also, I've met the guys many times and they're so down to earth it's amazing. Many of their fans feel that way too!
P.S.
A nice intro is 6 of One Half Dozen Of The Other-a best of from 1992 with 2 new songs including a cover of Rare Bird's "Sympathy", or The Very Best Of Marillion from 2003, though many songs are heavily edited .

Actually I forgot 1; I burned the audio tracks of the Live At Lorley DVD to cd awhile back & that's got to be in my top 3. Much better then any of the live cd releases.
