Description
Creating an ambient, cinematic and dark sound, EON evokes a powerful atmosphere that will excite superfans and new audiences alike.

Lifeson and Curran’s longtime friendship was the catalyst for the bands inception - but Envy Of None is not defined by its members resumes - they aren’t Rush or Coney Hatch and far more than the sum of its collective parts.

Above the beautiful cacophony of guitars, synths, bass and drums sits the fragile melodies of 24-year old vocalist Maiah Wynne - the newest name in Envy Of None’s impressive personnel. Hearing Mariah’s voice intertwined with the music will bring back memories of when you heard Shirley Manson of Garbage or Amy Lee of Evanescence for the first time. Wynne brings charm and beauty to these recordings in spades - with floating hooks and emotive lyrics transcending the oftentimes textural aesthetic.

The Storm Thorgerson-esque visuals that grace the cover may remind fans of Lifeson’s earlier work - Andy Curran explains: “[the] Hypnosis style artwork of albums like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin and others were so eye catching, surreal and attention grabbing and we wanted to scratch that itch. We were instantly drawn to Lebanese photographer Eli Rezkallah at Plastik’s photography and design work. We fell in love with a bunch of his work - we had a hard time choosing something because he had so many great images”.

However, the 1970s prog/Rush comparisons may end with the artwork - the music that this ensemble creates treads new ground with each track throughout its 42 minute debut, from industrial/electronic influences to post-progressive soundscapes. Envy Of None create a sound that will haunt, comfort and ignite.

"Picture maybe Massive Attack with a little bit of some electronic stuff with Nine Inch Nails influences, with this beautiful, fragile, sweet voice and some very, very dark heavy sounds." - Andy Curran (Envy Of None)

Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson says that his new band project are currently mixing their forthcoming album and are hoping to release it in late summer or early fall.

The project features Lifeson, along with former Coney Hatch bassist and vocalist Andy Curran and vocalist Maiah Wynne. Alex discussed the group during a recent interview with Sweetwater.

He said, "Andy approached me about four years ago, shortly after the last Rush tour, about just adding some guitar on some of the things that he was doing. And I did that. A few months later, he sent another one, and did that. And then we started getting more serious.

"And then we found a great singer, Maiah Wynne, from Portland, Oregon, just a fabulous, fabulous voice and a really smart songwriter and vocal performer. So we've basically done an album's worth of material that we hope to release sometime soon. I'm really excited about that."

Lifeson also explained that they are mixing their forthcoming album. He said, "We're just working on that part of it. All the music is recorded. We are mixing currently. We're in a good place, but it's very challenging.

"The industry is so, so very different than it was certainly 10 years ago, never mind last year. We'll see. Hopefully late summer, early fall we might have something. But we are very, very excited about it. It's pretty cool stuff, I think." Watch the interview below:

I looked up the singer, listened to a few songs and can't say I was the least bit impressed.

He and Geddy should get back together.

It's probably too soon for that.

Anything they would do would be compared to Rush and maybe they're holding off on collaborating out of respect to The Professor.

I really think, that if Geddy and Alex get back together, they should expand it to a four-piece to further differentiate it from Rush. Fourth guy can swing between rhythm guitar and keyboards (whatever the song needs) and can sing the high parts that Geddy can no longer reach. I would agree that Geddy sounded really rough on the R40 tour.

I've added details to the opening post. This isn't pre-orderable yet, but will be soon.

A lyric video has been released for the first single:

Alex Lifeson launches new band Envy of None with industrial debut single, Liar
By Sam Roche

The four-piece are set to release their self-titled debut album in April, featuring a tribute to Lifeson's Rush bandmate, Neil Peart

Alex Lifeson's new band, Envy of None, will release their self-titled debut album on April 8 through Kscope, and have kicked off proceedings with debut single, Liar.

The track sees Lifeson and his new bandmates – Coney Hatch bassist Andy Curran, producer and engineer Alfio Annibalini and singer Maiah Wynne – experiment with industrial-flavored, synth-heavy arrangements, interspersed with subtle acoustic guitar lines and crunchy electric guitar stabs. Check it out below.

And if Lifeson's new musical direction is up your street, there's plenty more on the way, as the rest of the forthcoming album promises to “ricochet between various shades of alternative, experimental and synth rock”.

“Lifeson himself is proudly aware of how little of [the album] crosses over with the band that made him famous,” a press release reads.

For the new project, Lifeson explains that Wynne's voice became his “muse”. “She was able to bring this whole new ethereal thing through her sense of melody on tracks like Liar and Look Inside,” he continues.

“After hearing her vocals on Never Said I Love You, I felt so excited. I've never had that kind of inspiration working with another musician. When we say she's special, it's because she's really special!”

Curran echoes Lifeson's comments on Wynne: “I sent over an early version of the song Shadow. When I played what she’d done back to the others they were like, ‘Who is this crazy talented person?!’”

“One of my favorite things about these songs is the intimacy of them,” shares Wynne. “It makes them feel different and more honest. There are some heavier songs too, like Enemy, and then tracks like Kabul Blues, that sound completely different to anything else.”

The LP will also play host to an Alex Lifeson-penned tribute to his late friend and former Rush bandmate Neil Peart, in the form of its closing track, Western Sunset.

“I visited Neil when he was ill,” Lifeson says. “I was on his balcony watching the sunset and found inspiration. There's a finality about a sunset that kind of stayed with me throughout the whole process. It had meaning. It was the perfect mood to decompress after all these different textures... a nice way to close the book.”

Envy of None is available now for preorder. Take a look at its tracklisting below.

Never Said I Love You

What I heard is shockingly unoriginal and sounds like a weak version of Evanescence trying to meet Stabbing Westward and Massive Attack.

It’s not bad at all, but not imaginative in the least, and quite dull.

I was hoping for something similar to Victor, but this isn’t that.

Good for Alex though, and perhaps the whole album cannot be judged on one track.

i feel rather obligated to mention my experience with this track "Liar."
i was fairly excited by it with the first listen; but with subsequent listens, i like it less and less.
and now, quite frankly, i don't rightly care to hear it again.

the two quasi-instrumentals: "Spy House" and "Kabul Blues" i find to be mostly monotone and mostly disposable.

I’m with ya.

Very boring and unimaginative.

I’m not getting this, but I’m glad Alex is still making music.

Another Victor album would’ve been fun though.
