i was going to add mellencamp to my "most disappointing since 2000" poll, but decided at the last minute not to............i heard a clip the other day form a new album of his, he sounds just like tom waits.

That's exactly who I have been comparing his voice to for the last decade or so. It's rough and most of the songs that he has been singing are somber... not necessarily bad, but it's way too monolithic of that mumbling rough voice.

Out of curiosity, I listened to the samples on Amazon. I still don't like this voice, but the songs are better musically than the last several, going back a decade plus... It's not that his music has been bad, but it's been nearly full albums of somber rootsy music that blends too much together. Maybe, it was working with Bruce, but this one is at least a step in the right direction.

Your description of "nearly full albums of somber rootsy music that blends too much together" exactly describes what I think of his latter work. I don't even mind so much his voice, but that rootsy bluesy music does get old and tiresome track after track.
