The first five albums were incredible...Greetings to The River. Nebraska to Tunnel Of Love, okay...sure. Human Touch/Lucky Town through The Seeger Sessions, with the exception of The Rising, no, thanks. Magic through Letter To You, hell no! (Queen Of The Supermarket? Ouch!!)
Obviously, there are some individual songs now and then that get my attention, not to mention that there were a lot of good things on the Tracks compilation, though much of that was mostly created in the 1970s.
I can't blame him for following his muse. If he has the energy and desire to record, go for it. I'm just not knocking myself out to get any of his new releases and of course I have them all. Maybe he should lock himself up somewhere with Little Steve and Southside Johnny and just bang out a bar band record. That might get my attention.

Letter to You is one of his best albums IMO.

I've spent the past month or so with the "Darkness" tour box. Having read about this tour for years (plus dabbling in some of the bootlegs), it's kind of weird to actually have all of it, in a box, and right in front of me. As confounding as I sometimes find Springsteen's creative and career choices, there's something so pure about these shows and performances that it's strange to realize that this was not yet his career peak, in terms of fame and fortune and whatnot.
As far his recent output, over the past ten years he's put together a string of great studio albums, going back to "Wrecking Ball"; I'm definitely glad Springsteen no longer has Jon Landau pestering him to write hit singles. The present day material that gets me to scratching my head is stuff like the live "Western Stars" soundtrack album (or whatever it was supposed to be.) It's not bad, just inexplicable. Also, I'm glad "Springsteen on Broadway" was released, but it's not really built for repeat listening.
Listening to the "Darkness" box, it strikes me that although people have been lamenting for decades that Springsteen mostly stopped writing songs about girls and cars when he turned thirty, had Springsteen died in a plane crash back in 1979, people would probably lament that he was never allowed to develop and mature as a songwriter, in light the new songs ("Independance Day", "Point Blank") he previewed during the "Darkness" tour. (Knowing the choices Springsteen faced in 1979, I've been playing a lot of "what if" as I listen to this box. What if he had released a live album in 1979--would it have overshadowed his studio albums? That sort of thing.)

'a letter home' is OK, but it has been a while since springsteen really knocked me out. He basically took the ‘90’s off but what he released was pretty mediocre, so...
