Sheryl Crow to release star-studded final album in 2019
Don’t call it her swan song, but Sheryl Crow plans to release her final album in 2019.
The singer, 56, revealed that her next album will be filled with a bevy of star-studded collaborations, but after that, she’ll focus on a different way of releasing music.
“Albums as an art form are a little bit of a dying art form,” she said during an interview on the “Kyle Meredith With …” podcast. “People are more interested in singles. I’ve made the decision in my head that the record that comes out next year will be my last full album, and I’ll just start putting songs out.”
Crow, who released her first album in 1993, says she feels good about ultimately transiting toward only releasing singles that feel “immediate” as opposed to putting together another full-length record after 2019.
Her final album — which will be her 11th overall — is set to feature fellow big-name performers such as Keith Richards, Stevie Nicks, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and the late Johnny Cash, she said.
"It's a very collaborative record with people I've asked to collaborate with me, people I've loved and have worked with and who have been heroes of mine forever,” Crow told host Kyle Meredith.
Crow’s most recent album, “Be Myself,” came out in April 2017. She’s released at least one full-length album every four years since her debut work, “Tuesday Night Music Club.”
She dropped her latest single, “Wouldn’t Want to Be Like You,” which features St. Vincent, last week.

'People are more interested in singles.' - What? As a relevant media singles died years ago. In the UK at least most people are now quite clueless as to what the No 1 single is. The cancellation of the perennial BBC TV show 'Top of the Pops' marked the final nail in the coffin. A lot of it is down to downloading and streaming of course, but the more the chart companies have tried to reflect these changes, the more detached singles have become from popular culture.

There's an article in the new Rolling Stone that agrees with several others I've read lately that states PAID streaming is THE music business model today; with MP3 singles downloads #2. Apparently the music BUSINESS is even profitable again for the bean counters.
In Europe where lossless downloads are still huge, they are also releasing more & more lossless single song downloads.

Elvis Costello tried this "no more albums" philosophy quite a few years ago, for much the same reason as cited by Crow. He didn't stick with it.

It is POSSIBLE that Crow will be one of the first to honestly say, "I really don't have anything more to say musically. Rather than scam my fans, I'm calling it a day".
One can only hope............ There isn't much precedent.

Al Yankovic said that Mandatory Fun would be his last full album, and he's stuck to it. He's released singles, and the Hamilton Polka was the first polka to ever chart in the history of the Billboard Hot 100.
Marshall Crenshaw never made an announcement, but his last album was 10 years ago. Since then, he's released a series of 4-song EPs, each with two new songs, one cover, and one alternate version of a previously released MC song.

Moved so d*** many times in 6 years what's the point?
Maybe lots of people on this board know about Song Exploder - a podcast that deconstructs records and the making of the records (inspiration, creation of drum tracks, bass lines, lyrics, etc.) with the artists themselves. I'm addicted. This week's show features Sheryl Crow talking about Redemption Day with Johnny Cash. This episode may not be the most representative but it was pretty interesting.
