Got my download at 9pm last night. Really liking it. A slightly broader range of influences - several songs sound like Who's Next outtakes, and a couple tracks have prog-influenced arrangements and chord progressions. The opener strikes me as Yes, but with Mike Pinder on Mellotron.
Still lots of Zeppelin to be heard, though.

I had it on today at the gym....right off the bat on the first song I thought I was hearing a female voice but then realized that is the lead singer.
The second song The Cold Wind sounds like Geddy Lee of Rush with the "hey's" from Rush's Fly By Night period. The Zep influence is still very strong. I will have to give it a few more listens as I don't love the lead singer's voice and the guitar work is very ordinary (compared to a Jimmy Page).
Like the last track "Anthem" which is the most Zep like.

It's derivative, but that's not a negative to me.
I'd like to see how they will progress with future albums.
Yeah, they're a very young band and I'm sure the classic rock schtick will eventually grow tiresome for them, so they'll progress to incorporate other influences. Still, enjoying what I'm hearing a lot -- it is derivative, but we haven't really heard a ton of this stuff in 20 or 30 years, so I welcome new music with this sound.
Greta Van Fleet sound like they did weed exactly once, called the cops, and tried to record a Led Zeppelin album before they arrested themselves. The poor kids from Frankenmuth, Michigan don’t even realize they’re more of an algorithmic fever dream than an actual rock band. While they’re selling out shows all over the world, somewhere in a boardroom, a half-dozen people are figuring out just how, exactly, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant are supposed to fit into the SUV with the rest of the Greta Van Fleet boys on “Carpool Karaoke.”
Just look at this photo: Brothers Jake and Sam Kiszka, on guitar and bass, are both wearing hippie costumes they 3D-printed off the internet. The singer, the wretched and caterwauling third brother, Josh, is in dangly feather earrings and vinyl pants, like he was dressed by a problematic Santa Fe palm-reader with a gift certificate to Chico’s. It’s a costume—Greta Van Fleet is all costume. And if things that look like another thing is your thing, get ready to throw your lighters up for a band whose guiding principle seems to be reading the worst Grand Funk Railroad songs as if they were a religious text.
It goes downhill from there.

They do kinda resemble Hanson with a harder more classic rock edge. I've got tickets to see the tour in NY and it should be quite the spectacle (I am assuming loads of young girls screaming mixed in with Classic Rock fans).

Woof, I really hate these kinds of pretentious reviews and it's why I stopped reading Rolling Stone and Spin magazines a long, long time ago. The guy's got basically one point -- these guys sound and look like a Led Zeppelin / Classic Rock tribute act -- and then he just keeps making up "clever" ways to drive that point home again and again without telling you much about the music itself on the record other than it sounds like Led Zeppelin.
I wonder if these guys actually play instruments or know anything about musical theory, because you don't see them writing a lot about that aspect of the music. Instead, there's this hyper focus on lyrics, which IMO, is the last thing I care about on a record. He writes more about their fashion choices than about the music itself. You learn nothing from this review, except he doesn't like it and it sounds like a "bad" Led Zeppelin.
What I think makes this review especially annoying is this point -- "But for as retro as Anthem of the Peaceful Army may seem, in actuality, it is the future. It’s proof of concept that in the streaming and algorithm economy, a band doesn’t need to really capture the past, it just needs to come close enough so that a computer can assign it to its definite article." These are clearly just a group of young guys who discovered Led Zeppelin and thought, "Hey, not too many bands play this kinda stuff anymore, maybe we should give it a shot." It's just genre music, plain and simple.

So does he like them or not?
