Description
Elvis Costello and The Imposters – Steve Nieve (keyboards), Davey Faragher (bass), Pete Thomas (drums) – have made a sensational new album that ranks alongside the best work this singularly great artist has ever produced.

Recorded in Hollywood, New York City and Vancouver, British Columbia, ‘Look Now’ is beautiful in its simplicity, reflective in its lyrical vision, surrounded by melodies and orchestrations that are nothing short of heavenly. It’s the first album Costello has made with The Imposters since the 2008 release of ‘Momofuku’ and his first new album since the acclaimed 2013 Roots collaboration, ‘Wise Up Ghost’.

Anyone anywhere in the world who has seen Elvis Costello and The Imposters live can testify to their unmitigated swagger. Costello’s suspicion that it was time to return to the studio was confirmed while on the ‘Imperial Bedroom & Other Chambers’ tour of the USA, last summer and he realized the power and sheer musicality of The Imposters had never really been fully captured on one record.

“I knew if we could make an album with the scope of ‘Imperial Bedroom’ and some of the beauty and emotion of ‘Painted From Memory’, we would really have something”, said Costello.

‘Look Now’ is an outstanding 12-strong addition to his song catalogue. Most of the titles were written solely by Elvis Costello although, ‘Don’t Look Now’ and ‘Photographs Can Lie’ were co-written with Burt Bacharach, who makes a guest appearance, leading The Imposters from the piano for those two ballads.

Please, please let it be a rock album with the Imposters.

Momofuku was the only thing he put out since Brutal Youth that I didn't think diminished his legacy.

I think "diminished his legacy" is being harsh. For me, albums such as The River in Reverse and especially Painted from Memory have added great depth to his recorded output.

To leave you with some more optimistic news, The Imposters and I - together with several of our other friends - have made a magnificent new record of which we are truly proud. It will be issued in October, I believe. We will return at the soonest opportunity to play that music and your favourite songs that still make sense to us all.

I just read that Elvis has cancelled his tour due to being treated for a very agressive tumor. Best wishes for a full and complete recovery Elvis.

https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-44736992

Elvis Costello has cancelled the remaining dates of his European tour as he recovers from surgery to remove a "very aggressive" tumour.

The singer-songwriter went under the knife in May, but decided to go ahead with his tour dates in June.

"The spirit has been more than willing," he said in a statement announcing the cancellation.

"But I have to now accept it is going to take longer than I would have wished for me to recover my full strength."

The 63-year-old, whose best known songs include Oliver's Army, Shipbuilding and I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down, is one of the most influential and prolific artists to emerge from the 1970s punk and new wave scene.

Over the years, he has collaborated with the likes of Paul McCartney, Green Day and Burt Bacharach; and he received an Oscar nomination for writing The Scarlet Tide from the Nicole Kidman movie Cold Mountain in 2003.

His 31st studio album is scheduled to be released in October.

He had already cancelled concerts in Southend and Plymouth before deciding to scrap all future dates, including shows in Manchester, Croatia and Sweden.

In a statement, Costello said: "Six weeks ago my specialist called me and said, 'You should start playing the Lotto'.

"He had rarely, if ever, seen such a small but very aggressive cancerous malignancy that could be defeated by a single surgery.

"I was elated and relieved that our European summer tour could go ahead.

"Post-surgical guidelines for such surgery recommend three weeks to four weeks recovery depending on whether you are returning to a desk job or an occupation that involves physical work or travel.

"It was impossible to judge how this advisory would line up with the demands on a travelling musician, playing 90-minute to two-hour plus performances on a nightly basis but by the time we reached the Edinburgh Playhouse [on 24 June], I was almost fooled into thinking that normal service had been resumed.

"The spirit has been more than willing but I have to now accept that it is going to take longer than I would have wished for me to recover my full strength. Therefore, I must reluctantly cancel all the remaining engagements of this tour."

He also advised fans to seek advice if they were worried about their health.

"Take very good care of your loved ones but gentleman, do talk to you friends - you'll find you are not alone - seek your doctor's advice if you are in doubt or when it is timely and act as swiftly as you may in these matters.

"It may save your life. Believe me, it is better than playing roulette."

I don't need to defend Hank, he can clearly do that himself. It's just that for the most part, I lost interest with EC many years ago and our paths went different ways. I was rabid through "Punch The Clock". Beyond that, I slowly lost interest. There were some moments beyond that, but at a point I wondered why I'd gone catalog on him and ultimately stopped doing so. EC has every right to explore his muse, but I also have every right to stop being interested. It happens.

When I Was Cruel is a top 10 Elvis album for me..........prefer it to Brutal Youth and Momofuku. The River In Reverse is a favorite as well.

I'm really looking forward to the new record. Slightly disappointed that "Go Tell (Your Quiet Sister)" isn't on it.

Giving this its first listen. Three songs in, and I really like how uptempo it is.

I am LOVING this album! I have not dug any album of his since Momofuku (his last with the Imposters), but being a huge fan of his Bacharach collaborations, Imperial Bedroom and Get Happy!, this one is hitting the spot for me in a big way.

This one seems like 60% Punch The Clock, 30% Imperial Bedroom, and 10% Painted From Memory.

I'm digging it.
