Description
The Eagles, ex-Doobie Brother Michael McDonald and founding Buffalo Springfield member Richie Furay are among a variety of music stars featured on upcoming album that pays homage to late singer/songwriter Dan Fogelberg.

The aptly titled A Tribute to Dan Fogelberg, which features covers of 14 songs penned by the folk-rocker, will be released on November 17. Other well-known artists who lent their talents to the collection, which was recorded over the course of several years, include Jimmy Buffett, Boz Scaggs, Train, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, the late Donna Summer, the late Dobie Gray and country superstar Garth Brooks. Fogelberg's old backing band Fool's Gold also recorded a track for the album.

Many of the musicians appearing on the tribute collaborated with Fogelberg over the years, including a number Eagles members. The album was produced by Fogelberg's widow, Jean; his longtime friend and manager, Irving Azoff; Dan's frequent studio collaborator, Norbert Putnam; and veteran concert promoter Chuck Morris.

McDonald, who contributed a version of "Better Change" to the album, recalls that after he first heard some of Fogelberg's early demos, "I was immediately transported to a musical place that I would look forward to returning to time and again over the years." He adds, "So proud to be part of this project."

Fogelberg died of prostate cancer in 2007. He was 56.

Tracklist
1. Phoenix - Garth Brooks
2. Nether Lands - Donna Summer
3. Better Change - Michael McDonald
4. Longer - Amy Grant/Vince Gill
5. Same Old Lang Syne - Train
6. Don't Lose Heart - Dobie Gray
7. Old Tennessee - Fool's Gold/Denny Henson and Tom Kelly
8. As the Raven Flies - Casey James
9. Sutters Mill - Randy Owens
10. Run for the Roses - The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with Richie Furay
11. Hard to Say - Boz Scaggs
12. Part of the Plan - The Eagles
13. There's a Place in the World for a Gambler - Jimmy Buffett
14. Leader of the Band - Zac Brown

Thanx Renny. Unfortunately I don't like most of the artists.

i am wondering which incarnation of the eagles this is, i guess it will depend on how long ago it was recorded if glenn frey is there or not.

and i hope richie furay sings the lead vocals.

and i listen to the boz scaggs on spotify and i have to say it very well done.

Bump: This will be getting a general release on the BMG label, and I've added the cover image and pre-order link to the first post.

The Eagles' track is described as their "first recording since the death of Glenn Frey".

Here's the Boz Scaggs track to listen to:

Dobie Gray passed away in 2011. His contribution must be something from the archives.

The Fools Gold track is likely the one from their first album. It's a great version but not new (maybe a great introduction to the band)

From the label's description:

This tribute album must have been in the offing for quite some time.

I would have preferred more singer/songwriter / folk rock artists & less Donna Summer, Vince Gill, Jinny Buffet, Dobie Gray, Train, etc.

This SHOULD have been CSN, Jackson Browne, Bruce Cockburn (DF did a Cockburn cover on Exiles), etc.

PART OF THE PLAN

“Joe Walsh is the hero of this song story. In June of 2011, when I asked him if he wanted to record something for the tribute he said, 'Count me in. I should do something from Souvenirs - probably "Part of the Plan" but I'd like to do them all.' He did record Part of the Plan: he played all the instruments except the keyboards and he sang the lead vocals and harmonies before it was decided that the rest of the Eagles would join him on the track. Unfortunately, in July of 2013 they were at the beginning of their ‘The History of the Eagles - Live in Concert’ world tour, and it was slated to go for a couple of years.

Joe emailed us from all over the world, saying he had the tape with him and he would try to get the guys into a studio in London, Australia, etc. In December of 2015, Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmidt recorded their vocals and sent them to Joe and on February 3rd, 2016, the last track was finished. For his credits, Joe wrote:

Produced by Joe Walsh
Recorded at home
I miss you Danny

One of the few people on the planet that Dan didn't mind calling him 'Danny', Joe went above and beyond to honor Dan."

ya know, dan fogelbberg was truly one hell of a musician and singer/songwriter, definitely doesn' come close to getting the recognition he deserves.

Futher reduced to $11.39.

And check out these additional samples -- first, a sizzle reel with snippets of several of the tracks:

Also, the Zac Brown track in its entirety:

michael mcdonald - better change....his voice just doesn't fit fogelberg, and it is way too short (2:41)

vince gill and amy grant - longer - all i can say about this one is i wish it were shorter.

train - auld lang syne - no words for this....sounds like train doing dan fogelberg. with a note for note sax solo at the end.

dobie gray - don't lose heart - terrible. nuff said

fools gold - old tennessee - not bad, nice vocals

casey james (no idea who this is) - as the raven flies - pretty good, real nice guitar work and vocals. quite possibly the best song so far.

randy owen - sutter's mill - totally countrified, more than the original.

nitty gritty dirt band & richie furay - run for the roses - very nice, very very nice, furay blends well with the dirt band and musically it is really well done.

boz scaggs - hard to say - the best song on the album, so far, never thought scaggs voice would fit fogelberg but this is excellent, he picked the right tune for sure.

be back in couple of hours..........

the eagles - part of the plan - you should know going in that it is much more like a joe walsh solo effort with the eagles on backing vocals

jimmy buffet - there's a place in the world for a gambler - a lot like the garth brooks thing above, almost identical to the original

zac brown - leader of the band - live, yes, live. just an acoustic guitar and some harmony vocals..........it's OK, nothing great.

so there you have my review..........i will tell you that i will not be buying this new, someday used, maybe for the right price.

i think they missed an opportunity to do something really special here, something that could have called attention to just how good dan fogelberg really was, as it is, this will probably be lost in the christmas shuffle and wallow away in obscurity.
