Anthony and Joe Russo returning to direct third installment
Justin Kroll Film Reporter @krolljvar Marvel is still focusing on “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which arrives in April, but sources tell Variety that Anthony and Joe Russo will be back in the director’s chair for a third installment, even though the film hasn’t officially been greenlit.
Marvel and Russo’s reps had no comment.
Negotiations wouldn’t begin untill after “Winter Soldier” bows but sources say Marvel has been so impressed with the production of the film, as well as with strong results from recent test screenings, that the studio has moved fast to attach the brothers to the next installment.
Since many of the actors have options for a third installment, a threequel is likely in the cards as long as “Winter Soldier” performs well.
A writer and release date are still pending for “Captain America 3″ but sources say Marvel and the Russos are already putting together an outline of what the third film’s story arc would look like.
Kevin Feige will produce with Chris Evans returning in the title role.
Going back to “Iron Man,” when Feige announced the first phase of Marvel’s release plans, Feige and the studio have been reluctant to commit to directors for subsequent installments too early in the process.
The Russos, who previously directed over 30 episodes of NBC’s “Community,” stepped in to direct “Captain America: Winter Soldier” in 2012 after Joe Johnson helmed the first installment.
Marvel prefers to get these deals done early so that the director can help develop future sequels. But the studio can also move faster when necessary — when Kenneth Branagh passed on the “Thor” sequel, Marvel landed Alan Taylor.
The move is clearly a vote of confidence for the helmers of “Captain America: the Winter Soldier,” which bows on April 4.

'Captain America' co-directors to return for third film in series
The co-directors of the forthcoming Captain America - The Winter Soldier have confirmed that they will return to oversee a third film in the franchise.
As Total Film reports, Joe and Anthony Russo have agreed a deal with Marvel to sit behind the camera for another film in the series. "Well now that Kevin [Feige, Marvel's President Of Production] said it, that means we can talk about it, I guess," said Joe Russo. "We're just in the formative stages of it right now. We just started breaking the story and we’re just getting an idea of what we wanna do with it."
He added: "It’s crazy working on it before the movie even comes out, because you want to see what people respond to in the movie. You want to get some inspiration from what people like about the film so you go, 'Okay, this is what we gotta lean into in the next movie' or 'this is what we should move away from, this didn’t work so well.'"

I think the biggest news is that they've slotted a May 6th opening for Cap 3, which is the same date that Superman/Batman is slated to open. This is a huge game of chicken and kudos to Marvel for being ballsy enough to jump in. Wonder if DC will cave and reschedule?

If they do, they're total pussies. The first movie to ever feature the two biggest superhero icons ever meeting up should definitely beat the third Captain America movie.

I hope that both studios try to outdo the other, adding more superheroes to each film until they have to change the titles to Crisis on Infinite Earths and Secret Wars.

Cap's got quality on his side but he doesn't have the love of the foreign audiences because of the name. Thor 2 made about as much as MOS worldwide, and it's still in play so it'll get even closer, just 26 mil shy.
But Bats and Supes *should* beat Cap domestically but I only give it 60/40 odds in their favor. And that's because of Batman. Cap will also have all the added buzz of Avengers 2 on his side as well. Domestically, it will be a battle royale. Worldwide, Bats/Supes will take it, they've got an 80/20 advantage there.
