Godzilla Resurgence Talks Too Much

Ultimately, much of the movie never pays off. The climax felt flat, and plateaus before it ever builds up tensions. There was never a release or a satisfying catharsis. Just lurking anxiety.

This isn’t one of the best Godzilla films ever made, but it’s certainly not one of the worst by any stretch, either. For every exciting or compelling moment, there are more that drag on and are in desperate need of edits. I kept checking my watch, waiting for the movie to build, but it never did beyond a feeling of uneasiness. Godzilla Resurgence is a series of compelling ideas in a so-so Godzilla movie.

The CG effects, however, provide a terrific blueprint for what future instalments can—and, no doubt—will look like. I eagerly await what’s next.

Japan Box Office: Toho's 'Godzilla Resurgence' Opens With $6.1 Million

The first Japanese 'Godzilla' in 12 years bows atop the box office, but fails to land monster-sized numbers.

Toho's Godzilla Resurgence (Shin Gojira) topped the Japan weekend box office with a Saturday-Sunday take of ￥625 million ($6.1 million) from 412,000 admissions, a good but not great opening for the first homegrown edition of the beloved monster in 12 years.

Godzilla Resurgence was released Friday and will have taken in a few more million on its opening night, though those figures have yet to be released. Legendary's Godzilla opened to $5 million in 2014 in Japan, and Toho must have hoped to beat that by more than the 20 percent margin it did. By way of comparison, Disney's Frozen debuted the same year to more than $7.5 million, going on to collect $250 million locally.

The Gareth Edwards-directed Godzilla finished with just under $30 million in Japan and its worldwide take of more than $500 million was a major incentive for Toho to revive its best-known franchise.

Directed by Hideaki Anno (Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan), Godzilla Resurgence is the 29th installment in the franchise produced by Toho. The film is an origins story, with Godzilla appearing in contemporary Japan, but for the first time. It has been mostly positively received, though Japanese critics tend to avoid the outright panning of films.

The depiction of the monster and the CG effects have been winning praise, but there has been criticism of the long sequences of dialogue between politicians, the military and other authorities. The cast of no fewer than 329 has been called out for being confusing, introducing too many characters and subplots.

The original 1954 Godzilla played on the fears of the new atomic weapons age, and the latest incarnation speaks to the anxieties stemming from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that triggered a meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant. The government was widely criticized for its response to the disasters, and the producers of Godzilla Resurgence have acknowledged the influence of that period on the film.

Godzilla Resurgence will make its way across Asia this month and will be released in more 100 countries this year, though a U.S. release date has yet to be announced.

The Original Godzilla Would Have a Very Hard Time Trying to Stomp Around Modern Tokyo

Clocking in at 118.5 meters tall, the latest incarnation of the king of kaiju seen in Shin Godzilla is the largest version ever seen on screen—even coming in above legendary’s monstrous take on Big G in 2014. But the very first Godzilla was less than half that size... and that wouldn’t help him much in modern Japan.

Shin Godzilla re-imagines Godzilla’s first ever appearance as taking place in modern Japan, so it makes sense that he’s deluxe-sized to tower over the modernized Tokyo that has grown significantly since the first Godzilla film released in 1954. In fact, if Godzilla hadn’t grown from his 50-meter height, he’d look a little bit silly attacking Tokyo, as this tweet from Fukublog explains:



That’s what the original Godzilla, superimposed in red, would be like in scale with Tokyo in 2016,. He’s simply dwarfed by the skyscrapers around him. Not quite as impressive as it was 62 years ago, is it? I mean, he’d still be pretty terrifying—after all, he’s a giant monster, and could probably still take most of those buildings down pretty handily—but it’s interesting to see how the king of the monsters has evolved with the city he loves to threaten the most.

Japan Box Office: 'Godzilla Resurgence' Becomes Biggest Live-Action Film of Year With $60M

Godzilla Resurgence (Shin Gojira) climbed one spot back up the box office charts in Japan to No. 2 this weekend during its sixth weekend of release, taking another $3.2 million to bring its total in the country to more than $60 million from 4.1 million admissions.

The revival of the iconic monster franchise by Toho is now the biggest live-action hit of the year in Japan and has already surpassed the studio's initial forecasts. The 29th installment of the franchise has also taken total admissions over the 100 million mark, the highest for any live-action series in Japan.
