Spinning off of an old discussion in the Man of Steel thread, I'm wondering what people think of as the core and/or essential components for various characters.

In the Man of Steel thread, Hanzo wrote (and I mostly agreed with)

Quote:
In my book, the most essential parts are --

The Krypton Origin
Superhuman Abilities "Far Beyond Those of Mortal Men"
Some form of "S" logo
The name "Superman"
Colorful costume

After that, these are components that I feel are very important but not critical --

Secret identity of news reporter Clark Kent
Found and raised by farmers in rural America

And then aspects that are important, but not absolutely necessary to have the mythology of Superman work --

Lois Lane as primary love-interest
Lex Luthor as arch-nemesis
The classic red-and-blue costume and "S" logo
Jimmy Olsen as pseudo-sidekick
The Fortress of Solitude
Perry White as EIC of the Daily Planet

I added mine for Captain America, Spider-Man, and Batman.

Quote:
Batman - Essential Elements

Parents killed in front of him as a child
Uses wealth to travel and train to become Batman
Dresses in bat-inspired costume to terrify criminals

Spider-Man - Essential Elements

Nerdy kid
Lives with Aunt May and Uncle Ben
Bitten by spider, gets powers
When he doesn't use his powers to stop a criminal, the criminal ends up killing his Uncle Ben
Learns that with great power comes great responsibility
Struggles to juggle personal life with superhero life

Captain America - Essential Elements

Weak/unhealthy and strongly desires to serve in the military to help the war effort (doesn't matter which war)
Tries to volunteer and is rejected
Chosen for Super-Soldier program
Becomes a symbol for the apolitical ideals of America

Superman:
The "What"
Powers: Flies, Heat vision, X-Ray Vision, super strength, super speed (but nowhere near Flash levels). Powers are derived from the sun.
Weaknesses: Kryptonite, distance from Earth's sun's radiation.
Appearance: Black hair, spit curl, blue outfit with S-Shield, red cape, red boots. Wears glasses in secret identity

The "Where"
From the planet Krypton, sent to Earth by his father Jor-El as a baby to escape Krypton's destruction.
Raised in Smallville, USA by the Kents, good salt-of-the-earth folk.
Lives and works in Metropolis.

The "Who"
Clark Kent, reporter/journalist for news org called The Daily Planet.
Rivalry, love/hate relationship with Lois Lane.
Arch nemesis is Lex Luthor, who is smart and bald.

Superman's easy. He's my favorite. The ones I don't appreciate as much are harder.

Daredevil:
The "What"
Powers: Radar sense that gives him the ability to "see" actions just before they occur, All remaining 5 senses are super-heightened.
Weaknesses: Sensory deprivation, guilt
Appearance: Blind, Red hair, red costume with billy club weapon and horns.

The "Where"
Hell's Kitchen, or a similarly crime-ridden small part of New York City.

The "Who"
Matt Murdock, attorney-at-law for the little guy. Partnered with Franklin Nelson.
Rivalry, love/hate relationship with Elektra, a female assassin.
Arch nemesis is Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime

Ooh, this is a good one. Agree with all of this (though I like what Soule is doing with Matt as a prosecutor so far). I'd add his various dualities as essential - Catholic/Devil, Lawyer/Vigilante, Promised he wouldn't be a fighter/finds a loophole in fighting as Daredevil. I'd also say that, even more than Spider-Man, DD is the quintessential loner hero. Part of weakness is that he takes everything on himself.
