If you read comics from the seventies and prior, every sentence ends with an exclamation point! Except for the ones that end in a question mark! Why is that? If you were to apply e-mail etiquette standards of today to dialogue balloons from old comics, the characters would be screaming because the dialogue was in ALL CAPS!

Apparently, no comic characters whispered prior to the eighties! Why?

Thank you for your time!

Total guess: Because the printing was so terrible and the paper was so bad, they couldn't be sure a tiny little . would show up in the end product.

Carl Barks said essentially that, IIRC. He said that comic book writers were encouraged to end every declarative sentence with an exclamation point. This essentially made exclamation points and question marks the only punctuation needed. And problems with printing were cited as the reason.

That, and these were very fast-moving stories. Writers put in only as much text as they felt they really needed, so they wanted readers to pay attention to every sentence. Lots of exclamation points gave every sentence a sense of importance!

The word balloons would have taken up half the panel if that were the case!

THANKS, DAPHNE!

Well, not quite. But it is why Flick/Flicks wasn't supposed to be used as a title.

We've got a thread on the board about "better in movies". Some things just work better in comics. All uppercase lettering is one of them!

I'm fully in favor of using exclamation marks! Even when they're totally unnecessary and have no purpose! They're invaluable and should be included in the Punctuation Hall Of Fame!
:ohyes:
