I just re-read Miller's Born Again, one of my all time favorite stories EVER (right up there with the Watchmen). What happened to that guy. This was brilliant stuff with some of the greatest scenes and dialogues in history. The way each issue ends, examples such as "There is no corpse" or "a man without hope, is a man without fear". And he wrote the Avengers, specifically Cap, with such respect. And David Mazzucchelli is brilliant.

Yep - one of the best DD..hell best Marvel stories ever IMO!

The fight sequences are just beautifully staged...loved the nutcase in the DD costume vs Murdock on the rooftop...so many amazing iconic moments...just brilliant work all around.

Very cool to see the Kingpin slowly unravel and lose his cool..amazing stuff all around. Great use of the supporting cast as well..Urich, the Gladiator, Karen Page, Foggy, etc all get their moments to shine.

The most brilliant story arc ever invented in the history of ever. Miller and Mazza at the height of their powers (though I have yet to read any of Maazzucchelli's independent material).

I just read somewhere that there was going to be a Miller/Simonson arc immediately following this. That would have been awesome. Instead we got some pretty lame material and the series pretty much petered out from there. How do you follow Born Again? You just can't. One of the few things Byrne said that was true was that this reads like "the last Daredevil story." And it does. It reads as if he never puts on the costume again, and Matt's OK with that.

Just amazing.

True on every point. The nostalgia with Karen, Urich being brave and taking off his cast, just amazing.

It does though the only thing I felt was missing, as a kid, was a beat down of the Kingpin.

This and Batman: Year One by the same team are two of my favorite reads by Marvel & DC.

Yeah, after Year One, it's my favorite Miller work.

I've long said that this is the best Marvel has ever produced.

It's too bad that Miller and Mazzuchelli couldn't have stayed on those characters -- alternating between Batman and Daredevil -- do a six month run on one book, then do the other. I think as a team they were on fire creatively and the fact that Mazzuchelli adopted a more minimalist style for Year One was so great. It's not like a Byrne book, which is going to look the same way no matter the character or book.

Me too.

Me three.

And I'll add Dark Knight and Moonshadow to complete my true Golden Age of comix. Just great stuff all on the racks at around the same time (within the same calendar year, I think?).

I always thought Dark Knight was overrated, The first two issues were fine enough but the second too just went downhill for me.

Don't like "Dark Knight" at all, but I've always thought "Moonshadow" looked interesting. I've never actually had a chance to read it, though.

Moonshadow was fantastic, and the collected "Compleat Moonshadow" edition is still the best birthday present I've ever received. Sadly, I had it stolen when my home was robbed a few years back (along with a couple hundred DVDs and CDs, as well as my complete TPB sets of Sandman and Preacher), and I've never replaced it.

John J. Muth creates such lovely and distinctive art.

Yup. His Dracula Marvel Graphic Novel (Symphony in Moonlight & Nightmares ... or something like that) was really nice too. Not as entertaining as Moonshadow, but a really beautifully painted/drawn book. Too bad he wasn't more prolific.

I think that's terribly limiting for both creators-- I do wish they would have collaberated again before Miller jumped the shark. A really solid team.

Yeah when he showed love for these characters ad he could write with subtlety

No kidding. Subtle is not in his forte anymore.

Ain't that the truth. I think Sin City ruined him creatively.

Totally agree. Or at least the direction he took there spoiled him for anything else. Everything is written in that style.

And I think his ego has gotten out of control so he believes that style should be the style for everything.
