UPDATE, 4:50 PM: The Wolf Of Wall Street‘s Margot Robbie is also looking likely for Suicide Squad. It looked like she was going to star in Ghost In The Shell for DreamWorks, but those talks fizzled. I’ve heard DreamWorks has instead made a $10M offer to Scarlett Johansson, whose action price has risen to that level after Lucy and her work as Black Widow. Robbie, who stars alongside Smith in the upcoming Focus, should slip nicely into the Warner Bros film. The studio would not comment.

As long as they do the smart thing and base it on John Ostrander's run. Don't know how well "The Jihad / Onslaught" storylines may go down these days to adapt.

David Ayer has been a busy man lately. The writer/director has turned out End Of Watch, Sabotage and now Fury is little over two action-packed years. Next up is the serious upscale that comes with commandeering DC’s freshly-announced superhero movie, Suicide Squad, and Ayer is ready for the challenge.

Money and time he’ll have plenty of – Suicide Squad is scheduled as the second DC behemoth to hit the big screen, following Batman V Superman in two years’ time – and, although he couldn’t say much, his vision for the movie should reassure fans. “I can say that it’s a Dirty Dozen with supervillains,” he said. “Then I can ask the question, ‘Does a movie really need good guys?’”
Maybe not, and on paper at least, Suicide Squad’s bad guys, antipodean asshat Captain Boomerang especially, can be an unsavory bunch. So how do you go about casting an Australian racist? “Like one would cast any other role,” Ayer rebutted. “I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m going to do what I do in my typical fever dream of directing.”
It may be a departure from the gritty, real-world settings he's delved into so far in his career, but Ayer is relishing the leap into the comic-book galaxy. “I love the passion [comic-book fans] have for these characters and these worlds. I think there’s something incredible about the comic genre and technology has finally caught up with pen and ink to render these fantastic worlds in a way that feels believable and visceral to audiences. It’s a secular religion in that regards. The mythology that these characters represent – the idea of them as fallen gods on Earth – is intriguing to me. I can’t wait to start exploring those corridors.”
Meanwhile the cast, currently rumoured to have Will Smith, Tom Hardy and The Wolf Of Wall Street’s Margot Robbie in talks, could have a Fury-style boot camp ahead. “I have a cookbook of preparation that I like to run actors through,” chuckled Ayer, “so I don’t think I would change [my preparation].”
Fury is out on October 22, with Suicide Squad doing its badass thing from August 5, 2016.
Sounds like he has a good handle on the concept. I always liked how Ostrander and Yale got into the characters' heads, especially in their sessions with Father Craemer, the priest that he also used in his SPECTRE series.

I hear that Warner Bros is in discussions with Jesse Eisenberg to take the Lex Luthor character he will unveil in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, and transfer the villain character to Suicide Squad. As Deadline reported, Will Smith and Tom Hardy are the being sought hard to star in the David Ayer-directed action film along with The Wolf Of Wall Street‘s Margot Robbie. Charles Roven is producing.
This would complicate the expectation that Eisenberg would star in the Todd Phillips-directed Arms And The Dudes. I’m hearing it’s unlikely he would be able to do both. He’s already set to reprise in Now You See Me 2, and this one is a clear priority since Kevin Tsujihara told Wall Street that it would be a 2016 release. There’s also a Zombieland 2 sequel that got some momentum with Dave Callaham writing the draft for Ruben Fleischer.

A few weeks ago, we reported that Will Smith, Tom Hardy, and Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) was close to signing on to Suicide Squad, a film director David Ayer describes as “The Dirty Dozen with supervillains.” Hot on the heels of learning that Jared Leto is being courted to play The Joker, we have now learned from sources that Robbie will play Harley Quinn. For those who don’t know the character, she was introduced in Batman: The Animated Series as the Joker’s girlfriend/henchwoman, and has gone on to become a popular rogue/anti-hero in her own right. This will be the first time the character has ever been portrayed on the big screen.
Comic book fans know Harley Quinn by name, but the average moviegoer might look at her and wonder, “Why did they create a female Joker?” Her origin is tied in with the Clown Prince of Crime, and while I don’t know how far Suicide Squad will delve into their history, it’s necessary to have the two together.
I’m a big fan of Harley Quinn, and I’ll be the first to admit that’s kind of fucked up since she relishes her an abusive relationship. She’s another one of the Joker’s sick jokes since she was a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum (her real name is “Harleen Quinzel”) who tried analyzing the Joker, and he psychologically manipulated her into being infatuated with him. The best Harley Quinn stories have managed to balance both the tragedy of her situation with the character’s lighthearted nature.
As for Robbie, I don’t know if she’s a good fit because I don’t know how they’re writing the character for the movie. Is she supposed to be “grounded”? How do you re-dress a character who first appeared wearing a jester’s hood, white pancake makeup, and a black-and-red leotard? I’m sure it’s possible; I’m just curious to see how they’ll handle it.
No matter the depiction (and I assume it will be reasonable and not this), casting Robbie is a smart move on the production’s part. She got people’s attention with Wolf of Wall Street, and with upcoming roles in Focus, Tarzan, Z for Zachariah, and The Taliban Shuffle, she should be a bigger name by the time Suicide Squad rolls around.
