Two great directors.
Both of them have many classic movies on their resumes.
But only one of them made Indiana Jones & the Crystal Skull.
So,Hitchcock.

I'd submit that Hitch has just as many missteps in his career as Spielberg. I honestly have them tied, in terms of talent, vision, and influence on the medium.

Oh,certainly.I was just being flip.Any director will make at least one bad movie,no matter how talented they are.
Choosing between such great talents as these two,you might as well choose by flipping a coin.

I think most of Spielberg's "bad ones" are the result of letting something other than the story influence his decisions. With Crystal Skull, it was his friendship with Lucas. With AI, it was his fanboy love of Kubrick. Don't even ask me what the fuck was up with Tintin.

Hitchcock.

Eric hasn't written a book about Spielberg.

...yet!

Like Screechy I've got them tied but only because of Hitchcock's reputation. Spielberg's films are more impressive* to me personally.

*Maybe I mean "enjoyable" but Schindler's List is not 'enjoyable' in any real sense of the word. ..

He needs to have directed 52 movies, first. :)

Even accounting for things like The Twilight Zone movie, and his Amazing Stories segment, Spielberg is only up to 30, with two more coming out this year.

Fake fan.

[Edited by Sorah] needs to be in square brackets.

In terms of personal preference, easily Hitchcock. I can see the case for saying that Spielberg's influence over the medium is comparable to Hitchcock's, though.

I've never seen an Alfred Hitchcock movie in my life.

I thought "The Birds" was pretty lame, although Beachy helped me appreciate it by suggesting I mentally replace the birds in the movie with dinosaurs.

Which brings us to Spielberg, ironically enough.

Anyway, I think they're both hacks who aren't fit to shine J.J. Abrams' shoes.

I'll say this for Spielberg---he's not afraid to try different genres.Anytime Hitchcock stepped outside the thriller genre, the result was often a misstep.

You need to see a few.
North By Northwest
To Catch a Thief
Rope
Dial M for Murder
Vertigo
The Man Who Knew Too Much (the Jimmy Stewart remake one, not his original one)

Some would add Rear Window, but frankly I think it's the most boring thing ever. :) If you like most of those, you should add in The Birds and Psycho.

Since you all keep badgering me about this, I guess I'll list the Spielberg movies I've seen from favorite to least-favorite.

    Raiders of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
    Minority Report
    Jurassic Park
    Schindler's List
    E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
    Jaws
    Saving Private Ryan
    Lincoln
    Munich
    War of the Worlds
    Hook
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    The Lost World: Jurassic Park
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

There. Now get off my back. GOD!

I have not had the pleasure of Rope or Dial M, but I have seen the rest of Jeff's list and endorse it. I do also think Rear Window's rep is larger than its payoff (although I enjoyed watching it). I also agree with moving onto The Birds and Psycho. I would also suggest (if you can stand black and white movies) Notorious (the Hitchcock film, not the B.I.G. biopic).
