Sal Buscema was the Curt Swan of Marvel Comics.

Great thread. I used to have that issue of Cap with The Yellow Claw. I need to look at these a little closer so I can ape the inking style.

I think you could count on really decent quality at all times with Sal. And his storytelling was just plain nice.

As a kid growing up I couldn't figure out why his Avengers and Iron Man work was so great and yet his Nova, say, so poor...I had no idea at the time that he was so often called on to meet a deadline that that was why his work could sometimes seem cliche and repetetive.
Looking back he is still to me the definitive Mar-Vell-artist moreso than even Starlin-and Namor. One of my absolute favourite comics was the one where the Avengers went to fight the wartime versions of Namor, Cap and the Human Torch. Brilliant super-heroic art.

Great thread Marcus.
Sal Buscema is one of the greats. An unsung hero. I love his classic art and his new style (a la Spectacular Spidey).
In all those lists of great artists, has anyone listed the number of published comics they have produced? For instance, Jim Lee is usually listed in the top ten and he's produced how many... not much more than 100 I bet (seriously, he hasn't drawn more than 150 has he?). Sal has got to be WAY up there, no?

His Hulk run was awesome. Sal Buscema is definitely underrated. Great artist.

When you see his name on a book, you know you're getting solid storytelling and art. Is he as flashy and distinctive as some other 70s Marvel then-rising stars like his own brother, Adams, Byrne or Perez? I wouldn't say so, but he was dependable and consistent, and remains so even today, semi-retired though he is.

Sal is also one of the nicest guys in the business. He will sit at a con and do FREE head sketches for any and everyone. I have the pleasure to meet him when I interviewed him for COMICS INTERVIEW many years ago, and the man is Perez level nice. Here is the cover he did for the issue, with colors by yours truly (and hey...it was my first color job...).

An awesome artist and one of my top favorites.
Bill Mantlo & Sal Buscema were an awesome creative team.
And his Captain America run with Englehart his classic.
Great work with Roy Thomas on avengers too.
I really ejoyed also his Thor run with Walt Simonson.
Currently inking Spider-Girl.
