Rocket engines burning fuel so fast
Up into the night sky they blast
Through the universe the engines whine
Could it be the end of man and time?

I have a great joke about Orion's Belt, but it will only get three stars.

Up at 4am, waiting with bated breath watching the NASA channel.
Ugh, they just put a hold on the launch, clock stopped at 4 min... no go due to a range obstruction.
Waiting...

edit: boat moved out of the way; new launch time 7:17.
All systems go.

I'm picturing Tenebrae watching this on TV, behaving the way guys do when we watch football - some snacks close to hand, punching the air when the launch is announced, cursing the weather when it interferes with the game, etc. :)

Bannings: He hung me on a hook once. ONCE!
I'm watching now at

http://www.nasa.gov/

There have been a couple of delays, one for a boat in the launch field, and another currently for a tech glitch.

They are currently at 44:00 until launch

Scrubbed for today. Problems recycling the fill and drain valves. Better safe than sorry.

Space launch systems are such a tricky business! This is why everybody has always been too afraid to try the OTHER Project Orion idea from the 1950s:

Glad as I am that it's never been tried, I've got to admit--it would be one wild ride.

Woohoo!
Liftoff was awesome. Love the onboard camera views.

As long as it took to get moving, it has got to be incredibly heavy.

It was a thing of beauty. Rockets taking off never gets old for me. I have seen shuttles heading towards the Cape a couple of times, with the double sonic boom. And I saw the shuttle take off once, from Ponce de Leon Inlet. It was so incredibly loud. Primal. Wondrous.

The Delta IV Heavy spews out a lot of hydrogen to cool down the engines before ignition, so they always get engulfed in a big wall of fire at ignition...which is always disconcerting. But the NASA TV Internet feed I was watching froze for several seconds after the rocket got engulfed in flames...which was even more disconcerting.

Which was the most disconcerting yet.

You'd be disconcerted by that too.

Has NASA given any indication as to when the first astronaut will go up in this?

This stuff never ceases to amaze me.

I was disconcerted about that myself. I saw it on the local news and didn't notice a freeze and said to my wife that I didn't think there should be that much fire. She said "Shut up!"
