You'd think Superman would be more concerned that the relationship will fail because they're cousins!

Maybe Lucy wasn't his mother. He says "my son Jimmy," not "our son." That, or the editor was asleep when that cover crossed his desk.

This story took place on Earth-Appalachia, so it's okay.

I think Clark throws enough genetic variety in there.
Inbreeding is bad because recessive genes are more likely to be expressed. Kryptonian genes are SUPER and should therefore override webbed hands or cyclopianism.

Reading Jimmy's dialogue on that cover closer, I just realized he said " my son Jimmy" not our son. It's very possible that Lucy is not Jimmy Jr.'s biological mother.
I'm so embarrassed for bringing this up now.

NOT FAIR! You got me snorting caffeine-free, sugar-free Mountain Dew now.

Sugar-free I can understand, but CAFFEINE-free Dew? Why bother? It's not like anyone drinks it for the taste.

Heh. I just got back from a weekend of visiting cousins... hrm... this sounds a bit odd... Anyway, I didn't even know they sold the stuff anywhere, but it is also sold in Nebraska.
So, if I want CF/SF Mountain Dew, I can go to Canada or Nebraska?
And if I want to clear my sinuses, I just need the heliotropic Dan Marcoux.

Gulp! You did say that. But you didn't use the bolds for emphasis like I did. Then I would've immediately spotted what you were saying... maybe.

Hey, there was that nutty DC Comics Presents annual where Superwoman (a history teacher from the far future) came back to the present (well, 1980 or something) and was hanging out, having adventures, blah blah, and nearly had an affair with Jimmy Olsen.
'cept she is actually a decendant of Jimmy's. So, naturally, cooler heads prevailed. Still, that would have beaten the 'kissing siblings' scenes in both Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back!

Wasn't there a comic where that was actually done? Trying to remember which series ... I'm pretty sure there was a story where the lead character ended up becoming his own great-grandfather, or something like that.

You're both right. It occurred in John Byrne's OMAC and in Timerider.

I'm so embarrassed for bringing this up now. I re-read this issue today. There's nothing in the story to indicate that Jimmy Olsen's son is from a different relationship than his marriage to Lucy Lane. In fact, there are a few instances where the wording strongly implies that Jimmy Junior is Lucy's biological son too: The way the cover is scripted might have been a mistake, or maybe it was the sort of deliberately stilted dialogue that was often used back then to emphasise the starring characters. Silver Age covers featured word balloons along the lines of "What are you doing there, Millionaire Bruce Wayne?" to make sure that the characters were fully identified for potential new readers. So, I think you were correct to begin with. (Finally, after nine long years, you can walk in the sun again, Leo!)
