Is the Trek animated series worth getting? It looks hokey.

It's '70s Filmation (the same guys that did the Archies and Josie & The Pussycats and Sabrina and the Groovie Ghoulies), so there's a lot of re-use of stock animation. Like, a lot. And the actors weren't together when they recorded their voices, so sometimes it sounds like Captain Kirk is talking from inside a closet while Dr. McCoy is in an auditorium. And they couldn't use any of the music from the original show, so there's a lot of generic '70s action cartoon music. But the stories, for the most part, were written by the people who wrote the original series, though they're often somewhat dumbed down for the half hour children's show format.

Still, it's one of the better '70s Saturday morning cartoons. At the very least, it doesn't insult your intelligence. And a couple episodes are really good -- like the episode where Spock accidently gets erased from the timeline and has to go back and prevent his seven-year-old self from getting killed is pretty awesome.

So, yeah, hokey, but there's some gems.

I think I'll pass-- no nostalgia for me. I was hoping maybe they'd be based on unused scripts from TOS and essentially be animated episodes of TOS but it looks like that's not the case.

In some cases, they are unused TOS scripts. In others, stories by the same writers. It's a good show. Watching it did make me wish that someone could expand each episode (improve the pacing), add in new sound effects and new CGI animation, recast the guest voices, and add the TOS music. What you'd have then is a pretty awesome new Trek starring TOS cast. Existing show has too much stock animation, Jimmy Doohan doing far, far too many voices, and that non-Trek music. But the stories make it work even with those handicaps, IMO.

It's not out on Blu-ray yet. I believe season 3 gets released in December.
