One of the Fever appearances (in poor quality):

Oh, appreciating Hitler is okay, but The New WKRP is a bridge too far.

Remember that commercial for the show that parodied U2?

I'm torn here.

My love for the characters from the REAL WKRP is well known. That said, I did not care for the new version. It just didn't jell for me.

I'm ashamed to say the only reason I watched the original WKRP was because of the sequel show.

And which version did you prefer?

Honestly it was so long ago I can't remember anything from either show. I was only eight yrs old when I watched them.

French Stewart was a cast member?
Anytime a show is billed as "The New [old show]",that show's usually not long for the airwaves.

And if Matthew Perry's recent past is any indication, the "new" isn't required for failure despite his ability to wear a baseball cap backwards which seems to be the only thing he has in common with the character of Oscar.

Has there been a truly successful remake of an American TV sitcom?

If you mean remake in the sense of an all-new cast, then I can't think of one.

If you mean remake in the sense of a revival with some of the original cast, there's The New Leave it to Beaver, which surprisingly lasted four seasons.

I liked the new Beaver better than the original series.

There was also this, which was a very good show in its own right:

It was inevitable that a sequel to "WKRP" would provoke a certain amount of carping....

The New Adams family seemed popular, though I couldn't stand to watch it, I have a hard time watching anyone try to be John Aston that hard, they just can't live up to it, at least in the movies, it felt like the guy wasn't trying to be an outright copy. It went on for awhile though and I remember talking to people who knew it for that show more than the old one, mind you I was not yet an adult and it may not have even been noticed by an older audience for all I know.

Yeah I was kinda excited about the New WKRP when I heard it was starting, that was mostly because I was too young to know those things can often be a little on the painful side to watch...and...that was one of the shows that taught me that lesson... huh that's kinda interesting that French Stewart was in it, I always find it kinda neat to find out someone I now know was in something that I completely ignored them in at an earlier time, thought admittedly I only ever did like him in 3rd Rock.

I can't find any of those commercials on YouTube. There was, I think, a whole series of commercials that parodied popular music videos. One of them was a parody of U2's Numb with Les Nessman in the role of the Edge.
