Hey All,

Ive been recently reading essentials, masterworks and scans of classic 60s era Marvel...Sgt Fury is next on my list but before I commit to a purchase I wonder if anyone has read this series?

Im taking about the WW2 series by Stan and Jack..from what i understand Kirby was on for the first 13 issues (the Masterwork basically) and those are the issues im interested in..anybody read em? what do you all think??

I used to read 'em as a kid, and I loved 'em. Exactly the kind of stuff you'd expect. Lively characters, explosive action, and lots of fun. Kirby drew GREAT war stories. I couldn't tell you what issues to look for, I just know I have fond memories of reading Sgt. Fury.

I have them. they are:

(1) not realistic
(2) over the top
(3) fun though, in the style of the comics of the time
(4) Kirby seemed to be enjoying himself in the first issue especially, drawing is top notch
(5) it's a bit repetitive though. Not as repetitive as Rawhide Kid, but somewhat because it is almost all nazis all the time.
(6) unlike what marvel became known for, continuity is a bit light.

anything more specific, you'd have to wait until i get home and look at the volume. It's a pretty thick volume though so it is worth it.

BTW, I believe Kirby pencils are in 1-7 and maybe 13. The other issues in the volume are Dick Ayers.

Rob...is it close in tone to the early tales of Suspense era Lee/Kirby Cap issues?

I really liked the energy of those issues and Im wondering if the Fury run has the same vibe...

Yeah, it is close to that. Wall to wall action pretty much. a bit formulaic.

i love the Sgt Fury title.in fact i love all of the Marvel war titles including Combat Kelly and Captai Savage.
of interest in the first run collected in the masterwork volume is an appearance by Reed Richards in number 3, and Captain america in number 13.

Anybody care to compare/contrast Fury with Rock? I've read me some Rock, but almost no Fury (at least as an Army guy).

Yeah, Ayers definitely does 8-12.

If you like 60s Marvel, and the war genre/WWII, you'll probably like this.

Kirby's artwork looks great! I notice that Fury has no eyepatch. Does this mean that he lost his eye during WWII? And if that's the same Dum Dum who is his second-in-command at SHIELD, did he take that same formula that Fury did?

During his time with the CIA, Fury began wearing his trademark eyepatch. An issue of Sgt. Fury had revealed that he had taken shrapnel to one eye during the war, which caused him to slowly lose sight in it over the course of years

At the end of World War II in Europe, Fury was severely injured by a landmine in France, and was found and healed by a Berthold Sternberg, who used him as a test subject for his Infinity Formula. After making a full recovery, Fury began working for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), precursor of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Six months into his service, he learned the extent of Sternberg's life-saving operation: The Infinity Formula retarded his aging, and if he did not receive annual doses, he would age rapidly and die. The doctor began a 30-year period of extorting large sums of money from Fury in exchange for the injections. These events, culminating in the end of said extortion, were detailed in Marvel Spotlight #31 (Dec. 1976): "Assignment: The Infinity Formula," by writer Jim Starlin and artist Howard Chaykin.

There was a time they showed Dum Dum retiring, slowing down, aging. Recently he looks fit as a fiddle, even if not an active agent per se, but more desk jockey. I don't think it has ever been explained.
