Review 1 — Doot's Review of "Pilot"

Good start. Not only is Doot's Power Girl avatar widely regarded as a contender for IMWAN's most compelling avatar ever (along with Brotoro's rotation of Totoros), it's thematically connected to the Superman universe right from the get-go. If Doot can sustain this level of audience engagement, it'll be an amazing thread.

Meteor shower sequence set in 1989: Visually pretty darn good, the visuals still hold up, I think. Although I don't think a meteor striking Earth has such contained impacts, even if they meteorites are very small. e.g., a meteor big enough to smash Lana Lang's parents and their car, wouldn't that just raze the entire block? But Lana and her Aunt are watching from across the street, and they avoid injury by turning around and kind of hunching over a bit.
Proofreading: Doot has a tendency to use commas in some places where semicolons or em-dashes would be a more appropriate fit. It's forgivable, though, as an inclination that generally befits his spoken-word career. His typo in the second paragraph of the first review is a bit awkward — "they meteorites are very small" requires repeat readings to confirm that it's a simple stray letter rather than, say, a missing word — but it's the only such typo I noticed in this review, so tentative kudos for that.

But most of the dialogue in this episode is pretty good, I think. There are a few other things that make you go "huh," mostly because they're too on the nose, but they're mostly workable, in large part because of the actors. I like the bookending dialogue about when toddler Clark first showed up in Smallville ("We didn't find him; he found us.") Also, even though it's pretty on the nose, I like that when the villain says, "I have a purpose, and a destiny," Clark retorts with a totally bad-ass, "So do I."
Diction: This is Doot's first use of the phrase "on the nose." It's a charming turn of phrase, and though we'll see it often, he uses it well.

*Lex lost his hair from getting caught in the Kryptonite meteor shower, when he was nine. (This means he's 21 years old in the present day. Six years older than Clark and his classmates, Pete, Chloe and Lana.)
This early mention of hair loss in Doot's reviews sets the stage for some very satisfying callbacks down the road.

*Clark has a crush on Lana, and Chloe has a crush on Clark.
Hm. I seem to remember a "crush" motif showing up in Doot's oeuvre previously. When I get a chance, I'll have to go back to some prior threads and see if I can jog my memory. Is Doot especially interested in the intersection of girls and crushes?

*Lana is a cheerleader, and she's dating Whitney, the quarterback.
He sounds like a douche. Actually, since he's not just a football player but a football player with a leadership position, I guess that would make him some sort of minor douche royalty — say, a Douche Chief, or a Douche Baron, or, I dunno, something like that.
