So, here is a weird poll question. How do you wash your dishes? My wife's side of the family all do it the old fashioned way, by hand. My side of the family find washing dishes by hand "unsanitary," "gross," and "uncivilized." What say you?
Yeah, I use the machine for most common items, but wash by hand things like big pots, delicate glasses and such. And yeah, I do all the washing. But Molly does most (99%) of the cooking so its a deal!

We use the dishwasher for most stuff, but it's gotta be rinsed and/or soaked first or the stuff doesn't come off. By hand for anything that can't be dishwashed or won't fit. I empty the dishwasher. Lori refills it and runs it and does the dishes by hand. This process needs to occur about two times more often than it does.
I only know that there are such devices as "dishwashers" from references on TV and elsewhere. And I've seen them once in a while in people's houses.

I used the dishwasher, but the GF hates the dishwasher so she does them all by hand. Since the idea in both cases is me not standing over a sink, I don't care.

I think it's a generational thing. Everyone I know in their 30s who has a dishwasher uses the shit out of it.
I washed dishes by hand for the longest time; that's why I love the dishwasher. But the GF is very picky about how the dishes are cleaned and is a "Do it by hand to make sure it's right" kind of gal. For me, not having to stick my hands in boiling water for an hour is worth having to hand wash an occasional dish / pan or two.

I wonder why people are so opposed (almost 50%) to dish washers?
We never had money for a dishwasher when I was growing up. I still didn't for the first two decades of my adult life. I suppose I could afford one now, but I don't have room in my kitchen. I also live by myself. It wouldn't make a lot of sense to spend hundreds of dollars on a machine to do those few dishes when a few minutes a night at the kitchen sink does the job at least as well.
If I had children I'd have them do the washing and drying as soon as they were reasonably able, to give them experience and build a little character. If I had children I also definitely wouldn't be able to afford a dishwasher!

I have only had a dishwasher for a few brief periods in my life: high school, after my parents remodeled our old kitchen; 2005, when we lived in our first DC-area apartment; and mid-2008 to mid-2010. The rest of the time it's been handwashing.
The machine sure does make it a lot simpler and faster and keeps the kitchen cleaner overall. But doing it by hand gets the dishes cleaner.
