I have a thing for the El Dorado/Rio Bravo/Rio Lobo trilogy... Rio Lobo is my sentimental favorite.

War Wagon and The Long Riders are also at the top of my list.

It's Unforgiven, because Unforgiven is the best movie of all time.

By the way, if you're interested in a great western, watch Tombstone.

Stagecoach. Most of you probably haven't seen it, so get it and watch it. After that I would agree with Jay that Unforgiven is worthy.

I could take this seriously as a poll if the following were added:

The Outlaw Josey Wales
Tombstone
The Long Riders
El Dorado
Big Jake

Thanks in advance.

Those are right at the bottom of the list:

It's like leaving The Sound of Music off the musical thread and including Flash Dance.

Stagecoach is very good, and a real pleasure to watch (especially after watching
many "B"-grade westerns from the same period). I did vote for Unforgiven, though.

"True Grit," no version specified.

Actually you could make a case that "Hell's Hinges" (1916) with William S. Hart, is THE western classic. Most of it looks rather quaint now--it IS nearly a hundred years old after all. But it has a climax that wouldn't be out of place in a modern Clint Eastwood movie. In fact, I'm pretty sure it inspired the climax of "High Plains Drifter." If you watch it in a properly restored version it's still impressive.

If it was remade today the tag line would probably say something like: "One man against the dirtiest town in the West--and they don't stand a chance!"

My vote was for Unforgiven, but The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and the new True Grit would be right up there with it.

I usually say Josey Wales but I think I'm switching to Tombstone.

Both are good, but they don't hold a candle to Unforgiven.

And, if it were a movie and not a TV show, Lonesome Dove.
