They use that in-story?

It appears so. I'm reading the last installment of Civil War: X-men, and the term has been all over the story. Government officials using it, etc.

It really reads kind of stupid.

wow that is stupid. Another pretentious "look how "realistic" we are" moment from Marvel comics. I can't stomach 90% of what they publish right now. I'm not asking them to go back to 1970, but how about writing the characters the way they were written for 30 years or so? Plenty of college age and up people were reading then, why wouldn't they do the same now? You can't tell me the fans reading Civil War would all jump ship if the future stories started getting lighter in tone, the art less moody and dark, etc. The majority of comic fans will buy anything, can't risk breaking their runs, a habit I freed myself of a year or two back.

Since Colossus came back, should it be "The 199" now?

I wonder if the next time Namor shows up, he will be sans ankle wings.

They do call them the 198 in story, but it is specifically used by those living on the outside grounds of the mansion, who were were given sanctuary by the X-men and not allowed to leave the grounds by the government and the government Sentinels (with humans inside). In other words, though the X-men are part of the 198 count, I don't think they call themselves the 198.

Quote:
After the Scarlet Witch's reality warp, the mutant population was severely decimated, with only an estimated 198 left with their powers. Among those depowered were the X-Men's founder Professor X and his nemesis Magneto. Because of this event, mutants are no longer the primary line of evolution, and because of their dwindled genepool, may be considered an endangered species, on the brink of extinction. Whether this latest development will stand the test of time, or if it will eventually be negated, remains to be seen.

Many of the mutants that retained their abilities were relocated to a tent city on the grounds of the Xavier Institute, "protected" by Sentinel Squad O*N*E. Since this group includes many former X-Men villains, the arrangement was strained at best. After learning that early U.S. government estimates cited only 198 mutants remaining, those mutants living on the Xavier Institute grounds sought a symbol to rally around and adopted the name "198" for themselves.

From Marvel's website

I'm not even sure that is the count anymore since IIRC a couple have gotten powers back. Or am I mistaken? could be.

I thought "The 198" was the number of comic book readers left in America.

There are more than 198 comic book readers in America.

Hey, can anyone here name all 198? Let's get a complete list together and send it to Claremont. He works too hard. :)

Well, at least they "pared them down to only the cream of the crop of fan favourites" like Joey wanted to ...
