Peter Jackson Plans 'Rings' Reunion for 'Tintin'
Andy Serkis will co-star for Jackson and Steven Spielberg

Andy Serkis has landed a main role in DreamWorks' "Tintin" trilogy, a set of films produced by Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson.

Jackson, of course, directed Serkis in pixelated form in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and in live-action and CG form in "King Kong."

The first of the "Tintin" films is set to begin production in September. Although the initial announcement on the project said that Spielberg and Jackson would each direct at least one installment, the reports in the industry trade papers don't indicate which director will be up first. The trade reports also don't indicate what role Serkis will play, though The Hollywood Reporter speculates that he would play Capt. Haddock.

Herge (Georges Remi) published the first installment of "The Adventures of Tintin" back in 1929. The series focused on the adventures of young Belgian reporter Tintin and his faithful dog Snowy, as they travel the world having geographically appropriate adventures. "Tintin" sagas have been published in more than 50 languages and the books have sold more than 200 million copies.

Spielberg and Jackson have long expressed their devotion to the series. Steven Moffat ("Coupling") has written the script, which will be shot using performance-capture technology and presented in digital 3-D.

I'm so glad this movie will introduce Tintin to a whole new generation of youngsters!

I am a bit reluctant since the books are pretty much perfection, but I'm remaining hopeful!

I don't know anything about Tintin but I am interested.

Likely, if I like the movie, it will cause me to check out the comics.

A win win.

That it is written by Steven Moffat is a very, VERY good thing. The last two Hugo Awards for "Short Dramatic Presentation" have gone to Moffat's Doctor Who stories "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" and "The Girl In The Fireplace."

I have very little doubt that he will repeat for this year's story "Blink" which is just about the creepiest hour of TV you're likely to ever see.

Tintin was a cool find for me when I first began teaching. I was able to find a complete set of the books library bound, and purchased them using my classroom funds. Sadly, because that is how I purchased them, I had to leave them behind at my first school.

The face of Tintin?

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ ... nment/home

Los Angeles — Directors Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson might have found their Tintin, the young Belgian reporter they are bringing to the big screen in a new film trilogy based on the comic books by Hergé.

London's Daily Mail newspaper reported that the lucky lad is 17-year-old British actor Thomas Sangster, who has appeared in Love, Actually and Nanny McPhee and has a role in Jane Campion's Bright Star, which is soon to begin filming. According to the website imdb.com, Sangster is a cousin of actor Hugh Grant.

A spokesman for Spielberg's DreamWorks studio declined comment on the reported casting.

While specifics about the project have been kept under wraps, actor Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings), who is set to play Tintin's globe-trotting buddy, Captain Haddock, recently told the IndieLondon website that he is about to begin work on the back-to-back features, with Spielberg handling the first film and Jackson taking the directorial reins for the second.

Hey, Tintin was a pretty lean young man! Who's gonna play Snowy?

The rumor from E! Online is that actors Nick Frost and Simon Pegg "have been cast as identical twins in a planned trilogy." YAY!

Meanwhile, Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily claims that Universal is backing out, leaving a financial concern for the project. BOO!

While we're waiting for that to come out, does anybody know anything about the old Tintin animated movies? I've read somewhere that there were at least two features made decades ago.

I saw one when I was little, but didn't know there were two. I don't recall much, but I loved it at the time. I ws a HUGE Tintin fan, and a huge Asterix fan when I was a kid. My local Library had all of them, and I was fanatical about them.

I first saw Tintin in black-and-white serialized reprints in "Children's Digest." I only saw scattered issues at other people's houses, so I never did read all of any one adventures. But I saw bits of several different ones. Then in college I found one of the color reprint graphic albums and read a whole story for the first time. I've bought a few since, and read almost all of them at libraries.

Hmmmm...now that I think about it, I need to lay in a stock of them at our library in anticipation of the movie. It'll be good to have them as tie-ins.

I recall seeing one animated movie back in the day... it was later reproduced as a digest. Tintin: In the Land of Sharks IIRC.

There were also animated shows based on several of his adventures.

From Wiki...

"Tintin is an upcoming motion capture 3-D film based The Adventures of Tintin, a series of comic books created by Belgian artist Georges "Hergé" Remi. Thomas Sangster and Andy Serkis will star as Tintin and Captain Haddock. It will be directed by Steven Spielberg, and the script by Steven Moffat is based on two directly-linked stories published in the 1940s, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure, the latter of which introduced Professor Calculus. Peter Jackson is producing the film, and will direct a sequel. Spielberg and Jackson also hope to co-direct a third film."

I have no idea what/who Tintin is but A) if Moffat's writing it, it'll be good. The young man pictured above guest starred in a Doctor Who ep last year as well.

Also very proud that Moffat, when faced with the decision whether to hook up again with Spielberg for the planned second movie of Tin tin OR take over as showrunner for Doctor Who, he chose the Doctor as it's something he's wanted to do since he was a kid. Did he disappoint Spielberg? He says he totally understood because Spielberg's a big Doctor Who fan too! :)
