Helmer moves Sony's 3D 'Popeye' forward

"Hotel Transylvania" helmer Genndy Tartakovsky is attached to develop and direct "Popeye," Sony Pictures Animation's 3D take on the familiar sailor man.

Avi and Ari Arad will produce under their Arad Productions banner with Sony Pictures Animation. As of November, scribes David Ronn and Jay Scherick were attached to pen the script.

Popeye, the spinach-loving seaman who first appeared in the "Thimble Theater" comicstrip in 1929, spawned numerous spin-offs, including one of the longest-running series of animated shorts and Robert Altman's 1980 film starring Robin Williams.

SPA production prexy Michelle Raimo-Kouyate and production SVP Michael Lachance will oversee the project for the studio, which was keen to put Tartakovsky on another project soon after "Transylvania" wrapped. Sony will release "Transylvania" in September.

Tartakovsky is currently attached to direct a feature version of Cartoon Network's "Samurai Jack," which he also created.

Sony's toon arm has found success with "The Smurfs" and "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," which grossed $559 million and $243 million worldwide, respectively. Both pics currently have sequels in the works.

Studio's most recent release,"Pirates! Band of Misfits" performed more modestly -- budgeted at $55 million, pic earned $104 globally.

WME reps Tartakovsky. Sony Pictures Animation declined to comment.

I would not say I am a fan of the characters, but I certainly don't dislike. Regardless, Genndy Tartakovsky (of Dexter's Lab and Samarai Jack fame) will bring an interesting take on the franchise which I look forward to seeing. Certainly not about to get my hopes up on this one, but I will probably catch it one of these days.

This will not compare favorably with the live-action Robin Williams version.

Arthritis compares favorably to the Robin Williams Popeye.

A CGI version of Popeye was done a few years back---a TV special called Popeye's Voyage:The Quest For Pappy.
It was cute, and a bit jarring seeing those characters in 3-D.Popeye was voiced by Billy West,of Futurama fame.

Billy West is not a bad choice for Popeye. He does good voices and he can act. They will probably use celebrities for the voices in this one which might detract from my enjoyment some.

I'll concede that he was the first maritime superhero. That's as far as I'll go with that one, though.

Arthritis compares favorably to the Robin Williams Popeye.

Well, I have arthritis, and I still enjoyed that movie more than I do the arthritis.

It was a better performance from Williams than he's given since....I dunno when. Maybe Moscow on the Hudson? The World According to Garp? Something he did prior to Good Morning Vietnam, where he might have been seriously mistaken for an actor. ;)

(BTW, I was kidding about the Popeye movie - the arthritis isn't too bad in comparison).

In fact, I think that Popeye movie may have been Williams' big screen debut.

One day this incontrovertible fact will make it to the history books.

In the old Popeye video game from the 80s, when Popeye ate the spinach his skin would turn green like the Hulk.

That ruled, and they should do that in the new movie.

I loved that game. Did you know the original Donkey Kong game was developed as a Popeye game, but they couldn't get the license nailed down, and had to come up with some new characters.

I wonder if his helmet will get knocked off or he will rip it off himself?
