For once, I agree with James. If you're declared an enemy of the state, they won't let you see a lawyer, lest you pass instructions to the Quaker community or other radical pacifist groups.

Jay, William Kuntsler (gee, i hope I'm spelling it right) was the modern godfather of attorneys that handle politically unpopular cases.

Now I need to go hide. There's someone knocking on the door. They look like salt and pepper shakers with plungers on the end of them. They're saying that giving out campaign literature, but the one who seems to be in charge is pointing at me and screaming "Exterminate! Exterminate!"

Turthfully, I never knew him. He appeared on tv when I was a kid acting all whacky and defending Colin Ferguson, for a short time, and he was posited the "black rage" defense-that because of racism and injustice a black man might just snap and go whacky.

Ferguson fired him I believe and wound up representing himself and rejected the defense, claiming he didn;t do it. Kunstler basically said the nuttiness of him representing himself and insisting he didn't do it proved his incompetence.

Which led to the odd scene of him cross-examining witnesses and saying "Isn't it true that it could have been another black man who shot at you/you tackled."

and witness after witness going "No it was YOU!" and pointing right at him

He also examined himself.

Ferguson was in my dad/uncle's jail for a time.

Our equivalent of Kuntsler in these parts is Matthew Perry. He's now been a federal judge for many years, and holds court in a federal courthouse named after him. He's sort of the grand statesman in the legal world of our state. I've had a case before him and he's got an amazing judicial temperament. He sort of looks and acts like Morgan Freeman.
