I've a soft spot in my heart for Roxanne. I love Cyrano de Bergerac.

LA Story is also mighty fine.

I liked it, too. Saw it more than one time at the theater, somehow (I don't remember why -- had something to do with going to see it with different people). But it's kind of "off" somehow. Doesn't hold up.

My vote was for Trains, Planes and Automobiles. Martin and John Candy were gold.

(Bowfinger is an underrated comedy. Both Martin and Eddie Murphy are almost as good as Martin and Candy.)

I'd have to go with The Jerk, followed closely by Planes, Trains & Automobiles. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid is a guilty pleasure movie I throw in every now and then to see how many movies they mixed it with...

Planes Trains, but Bowfinger is an underrated classic. His best movie in 20 years.

Will always love L.A. Story. (Which feels to me like an impressionistic, magical-realist memoir, if not a literal one.) Martin's silliness, in the context of L.A.'s inherent ridiculousness, is somehow almost normal. Victoria Tennant is dreamy. Sarah Jessica Parker is a total California sex bomb. And the talking traffic sign is kind of like R2-D2 or Widget or Bumblebee—an unlikely but loveable pal.

Too 80s, do you think?

I don't think any Steve Martin movie has as many laughs as his first couple of albums but, believe it or not, I think the one I liked the most was Father of the Bride. Maybe because I went into it with such meager expectations but ended up really enjoying it.

I like Steve Martin, but never understood why he did The Pink Panther. I saw about five minutes of it once on TV and that was enough for me.

I wonder what else is missing. Too bad I won't bother to look.

I'm torn between Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Roxanne. I'm leaning toward Roxanne. Bowfinger and The Jerk are two of his funniest.

Bowfinger.

Maybe he has a competitive streak.He may have taken the role to contend against the Peter Sellers portrayal.He also played Sgt. Bilko,and while he didn't make anyone forget Phil Silvers or Sellers,I thought Martin did a credible job in both roles.The movies themselves,on the other hand...

Martin isn't afraid to take chances.He was an Italian mobster in My Blue Heaven even though he was the least convincing Italian mobster ever on film(which was probably part of the joke).He was also a faith healer in Leap Of Faith;less than credible,but not an embarassment either.His risk-taking is surely what's allowed him to have the long career he's had,rather than holding on to the wild-and-crazy-guy gags after their expiration date.
