I got the first two seasons of LOIS AND CLARK off AmazWAN when I ordered Season Four of SMALLVILLE. I just watched the pilot episode.
Overall, it's pretty good. The pilot was a little slow at times (There was a long wait before Clark finally dons a costume), but it was still fun.
The show uses the standard Superman formula but places greater emphasis on the Lois and Clark relationship. By featuring another sexy, bantering couple with unresolved sexual tension, it hoped to capture the ratings magic of previous shows like MOONLIGHTING and REMINGTON STEELE.
Thing is....I think it worked very well, at least in the first couple seasons. Terri Hatcher may be the best screen Lois Lane of all time (in fact, I'd argue that she is, but I digress). Dean Cain is a good Superman. He doesn't make me forget Christoper Reeve (or even Tom Welling), but he's good. More importantly for this show, he's a good match with Hatcher - just as Margot Kidder is likely a better match with Christopher Reeve. It's all about chemistry.
As you all know, I've been watching Superman and Batman films and tv shows from different eras. What's interesting about both characters, I think, is that they really do lend themselves to many different approaches. This romantic comedy approach to Superman is, I think, as legitimate as the teen angst drama of SMALLVILLE. (Besides, for the die-hard Superman fans - all the usual stuff is here as well. Superman still saves the day every week!) I also think that this show deserves credit for making Lois Lane as interesting a character as Superman.
So far, I've only watched the pilot. As usual, I'll post the occassional comment here as I continue to watch.

It's funny when someone says in many words what I would have said had I actually thought.
You say stuff more gooder.

I just watched the First Season episode about the man who invented an invisibility suit and ...
I could SWEAR that I saw Roger Stern in the crowd during the opening scene! Superman is getting the key to the city, and Uncle Rog (or somehow who looks a lot like him) was in the crowd cheering!
Does anyone know if that was Roger Stern? (Uncle Rog - was that you?)

I'm pretty sure that the Superman comic book team did visit the set during the first season.

Yes, c'est moi! If you freeze frame it, you can probably pick out a number of us in the crowd...Denis, Brett, Tom, Doug, Bog, Weezie, Dan, Jerry...we're all in there somewhere. I'm probably the easiest to spot because I was standing right between Teri Hatcher and Michael Landes (1st Season Jimmy).
As I recall, Mike Carlin has the first line in that episode -- he's the one who points up into the sky and says "Look --!" -- even though it was looped in by someone else in post-production.
And that chant -- "SU-PER-MAN! SU-PER-MAN!" -- when Dean gets the Key to the City? That's Dan Jurgens who starts it off.
And if you watch closely, you'll notice that I'm the one tugging on Superman's cape when we all mob him.
Now, where's that Masked Man?

Don't tug on Superman's cape...
Don't spit in the wind...
You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger...
And you don't mess around with Uncle Rog.

Oh, wow!! Very cool. Thanks, Uncle Rog!
(Dang! I love the internet!)
I just took a look at the scene again. Now, I recognize both Mike Carlin and Louise Simonson. They're standing on opposite sides of a Dean Cain Superman cardboard stand-up! As you noted, Mike Carlin then walks away, notices Superman flying in and points to the sky!
You mentioned other creators, but unfortunately, I don't know what any of them actually look like! I think it's pretty dang nifty that you're all there, though!

...I'm not so sure about the actual wedding episode, though, when Dick Van Patten plays God...or maybe just the dad from Eight is Enough. Whomever.
I loooooooooooooooooooved the casting of Cat Grant - I dunno how close it was to the character in the comics, but I don't care. She was freakin' cool
Howie Mandel as Mxys-myxs-mixiss...that fifth-dimensional dude (I could look up the spelling, but I won't ). An odd choice of casting there...a different interpretation. As I recall, they changed the pronounciation of his name, as well...
Sonny Bono as the Mayor of Metropolis, though - inspired casting
Yeah, I liked the show too

I should probably note:
If anyone else wants to see the cameos of Uncle Rog and the other creative types-
The episode is entitled "I'm Looking Through You." It's Episode #4 of Season 1. It's on Disk 2 of the LOIS AND CLARK Season One dvd. The scene in question is the pre-opening credits sequence, so you won't have to wait for it.

Ian Sokoliwski wrote: Sonny Bono as the Mayor of Metropolis, though - inspired casting I just watched an episode with Bono as Mayor! Is he a recurring character or is that his only appearance? The episode was about a heat wave in Metropolis. Bono, as the Mayor, leads a press conference and announces, "This heat goes on!" Then, Lois raises her hand to ask a question, and Bono points to her, saying, "I got you, babe!" Groan.

Yeah, but the episode with The Edge as the City Treasurer is PRICELESS!

The truly sad thing is that I was tempted to make a similar U2 joke when I posted my Bono episode comment.

Heh. I'd forgotten about all of those. I may have to go purchase some seasons of L&C.

I hated that series and thought Dean Cain was god awful. It takes more than black hair and decent looks to play Superman.
