I got the chance to read both of these recently. I thought I'd see what everyone else makes of them. And to keep the voting fever until we can get another Artist Challenge up and running here we go.

Which is better; Generations by John Byrne or the Nail stories by Alan Davis?

Tough one, but Nail(s) won, just 'cause it's so damn pretty.

Tough choice, I read Another Nail, but have yet to read the first(which is on my list of things to do), but I really enjoyed Byrnes' Generations series, I just wish they'd let him do another one.

Because you included Generations 3, I had to go with the Nail/Another Nail (even though there wasn't, in fact, another nail). G3 was just horrible, art and story, and that's even if you ignore the bizarre pedophilia scene.

I think both the Nail and Generations were inspired works, just incredible stuff. Generations 2 continued to capture some magic, but G3 just lost me. The Nail was brilliant. Even after reading two three or four times. there never should have been a follow up story. The premise was finite. I picked Generations because it was far more epic in scope, but I'm happy no matter the winner here

Davis doesn't slaughter characters that I really liked (like JB's Supergirl), so I voted for the Nail. Plus, I liked the Ultra Man / Princess Projectra family.

I went with Generations, never read G3.

Hah, he only slaughtered Bat-Girl and Robin in the worst imagineable way! Still gives me the creeps...

I voted Nail/Another Nail. GENERATIONS has always read to me as more of an interesting exercise than a story with a strong emotional core. The first NAIL is one of the best Elseworlds that I've read.

Very tough call.
Generations was something that I really liked. The art was good, the story was really intriguing, but then, there were the "lessons" , and finding out that one of the characters was written specifically to address one of Byrne's gripes, and a 3rd followup that was interesting, but underwhelming.....
And the Nails. Again very nice art, great story with lots of twists and turns, BUT the second part.........

Aaahh...I gotta go with Generations. Byrne's personality aside, it's still something I really enjoyed, and would look forward to if there were to ever be more .
(Hell, "I discovered that by bombarding Aceytlsalicylic acid with a frequency of 103. megahertz, I could step thru time!" is still a really cool line!)

Is that a Luthor line from Generations? That's positively Morrison-ian!

Strangely, because he included Generations 3, I have to vote for The Nail.

Weird, I thought I owned at least one of the Nail TPB's, but I see neither.
Shopping spree!

IIRC, Byrne and another creator were talking about how smart Luthor was, and Byrne said he's so smart he could build a time machine with an FM radio, and an asprin.
He ended up using the line in Generations.
Later on, he said he ran across an old Superman Story afte he wrote it, that had a similar line.

'course, I just realized....
Spoiler: show
It's not REALLY Luthor that says that line, It's the Ultra-Humanite!

Heh. I had to include them all. I was debating whether I should just do the first two against both Nail's. Generations 3 really did not work out well. It's a shame. He had a nice concept going.
