Beatles, easily.

Though in general I prefer my rock of the Stones variety, if that makes sense.

I prefer early Stones to early Beatles, but later Beatles to later Stones.

Why is this an "eternal debate"? The Beatles seem to be crushing the Stones.

I dunno, it's a debate that seems to be big throughout pop culture. The recent thing that reminded me of it was the film I Love You, Man. Paul Rudd, a music geek in the film, says, "Alright guys, everyone at the same time-- Beatles or Stones?" And everyone ignores him.

If it HAS to be The Beatles & The Stones & HAS to be between one or the other, then The Stones are never ever EVER going to win a poll, you could list 30 bands & if The Beatles are in it, they're going to win.

It's like starting a poll about "who's the best comic book artist?" & putting Kirby in the poll. It's done.

I genuinely believe, as a singles band, even today, The Beatles are hard to top, & they single handedly created a legacy of great British bands built around single releases that goes on through punk, to indie, to Britpop.

But based on albums, The Stones take it for me, they really do. I'm not saying The Beatles don't have substance past their singles, but very few artists at their peak can match the level of cross genre brilliance that The Stones achieved.. & IMO,
to a level that is highly under-rated when you look at the tag of "genius" thrown around at the likes of Brian Wilson & yes, Lennon & McCartney.. Exile on Main Street or Let it Bleed absolutely rain down buckets of piss on teh media darling that is Pet Sounds, IMO, despite actually liking that album a lot.

Anyways, the irony for me is that if we're going for that sort of time & period, almost all of my own personal favourite stuff would have been American I have almost zero love for The Kinks or The Who or most of the Brit bands of note from that time.. All the shit that i love is Velvet Underground or Love or Stooges records. Funny world.
