Legion Lost 7. DeFalco's first issue. (I have a real soft spot for his writing, as he was writing Fantastic Four when I was young.)

Horrible.

Book = dropped.

I ended up not hating Fear Itself that much, sceptic for its overwhelming pointlessness.

Next ill be reading the last couple issues of Secret Avenges. I've read it's good, but so far I've been underwhelmed by Remender's efforts. Well see.

A graphic-album collection of the eight-part "Colossus: God's Country" originally serialized in Marvel Comics Presents. Monk or Darragh, did you ever read this?

Yes, I've read it.

Quote:
It's by Ann Nocenti and Rick Leonardi. The plot is a bit thin, but it's certainly very quintessentially Nocenti. Straight-up political discourse without any subtlety whatsoever.

That's fair.

Quote:
It's all a bit dated now, as the whole thing of writing a Russian character in America is Nocenti's entre into musing on the Cold War and glasnost and all of that stuff. It's all very, very VERY liberal. Nocenti is farther left than most, I think.

It's not Leonardi's best work. There are some broadly comic bits involving an old man that I think are meant to have a certain whimsical flavor, and Leonardi doesn't really nail it. But he does some good action scenes.

Nocenti writes Colossus as intelligent, which is nice ... but there are also some characteristically idiosyncratic non-sequiturs. Like Colossus' thought balloons as he ponders the fact that people make war over their ideologies. It starts out with some existential stuff about beliefs and fighting for them, and then he thinks to himself, "I know what I believe in -- I believe in muscle! Belief hardens into muscle!"

That's the line I actually remember from when I read this as a ten-year-old. Me and my best friend at the time both thought it really odd, and would make each other laugh by reciting that line in bad Hanz-and-Franz-like accents.

Anyway, overall, good stuff. Nocenti was doing the whole "weird" thing with the X-Men 13 years before Grant Morrison. And the unvarnished political stuff is rather bracing, if a bit artlessly applied.

Spot on!

Nocenti FTW!!

Just read Avengers X-Sanction 4.

The whole series was average at best. The finish was also predictable, but long overdue.

Spidey & Human Torch go to space to investigate John Jameson disappearance. Great Dialogue in the issue. Spidey/Torch banter is awesome. Some funny stuff in there. If you like Buddy comics this is one to pick up.

I just read Resurrection Man #7, and it's pretty good. I'll keep on reading it.

I also just read Scarlet Spider numbers 1, 2 & 3 - I'm pleasantly surprised and I'll be sticking with that as well. It's the first Marvel comic I've enjoyed since the end of World War Hulk.

Same. It's really quite fun. Not at all what I expected, but in a good way.

Last night, Incredible Hulk #7. Enjoying it, but a little too decompressed. Get on with the story.

Also Millar's Millarworld book Supercrooks #1. Good as usual.

I just finished "Life With Archie" #18; the finale of the Archie Multiverse tale.
As a vetran of DC & Marvel multiverses, this was not particularly grounbreaking to me
but I'll bet the average exclusively Archie fan was mind blown.
Fun little story. Reccommended just for the fun of it.

Yeah, I like the idea that he's hesitant about being a superhero, and keeps denying that he is one...even though he is one. :)

Also, it's good that he's in a city you usually don't read about in a comic ("I ran out of skyscrapers!"), and that he's the only superhero in town.

I loved the skyscrapers moment. Memorable, and a great way to effectively tell us the major differences between the usual Spider-Man setting.

JLA 7.

Wow was this an improvement. This IS the Justice League. A lot of fun character moments, snappy banter, and great interactions with each other. We got to see everyone's opinion of the others, and none of it seemed forced.

I didn't mind the first 6 issues, I thought they were fun in a popcorn action movie sort of way.

This was a LOT of fun though. We see the team in the present day, and it's obvious how well they all know each other, keeping the familiar tics, but not overusing them. Everyone had their own distinct personality (Superman was very quiet though. Fits, I guess). We definitely see the strong friendship between Flash and GL.

The art by Gene Ha is fine, no Jim Lee but that's an unfair comparison.

I really really liked this issue. A huge step up, IMO.

I liked it, too. I'm a fan of the "Big Action arc followed by character-driven interlude" structure, so this really worked for me. This League still feels a bit too immature, and I'm not sure I'm a fan of the idea that they're essentially deified and that some of the members seem to take advantage of that, but I'm willing to wait and see where it's going.

For my weekend trip, I've loaded almost all of Marvel & DC's titles from 1964 onto a USB drive and will be reading them on my tablet during the flights. If I make it out of January, it'll be a miracle!

Unwritten 28 -- wow. Catching up on this series (after switching from dirty trade-waiter to monthlies).

This is one of my all time favorites. This storyline with the Tinkererer is the best it's been.

I just read the Rocketeer Adventures 2, issue 1.
And while these issues aren't exactly Dave Stevens, they are fun, and you
can tell that all the authors and artists who work on the short stories loved
the original Rocketeer comics.

This is the second go around for this title. It had four issues last year. I
sure hope they keep these going for awhile.

This one has a wonderful "team-up" with a classic DC character… sort of.

Looking more into Elseworlds, I discovered this mini-series that I never heard about and the premise seemed interesting -- what if superheroes existed but worked in a manner so that the general public didn't know?

Image Image

The McKone art is absolutely gorgeous and I really like his JLA re-designs, but there's a couple strikes against this series -- it just ends too quickly and in a way that doesn't feel true to the characters. The first issues was absolutely terrific but in the mad rush to end by issue #2, everything happens so fast that it doesn't feel like it has enough weight. I think a third issue would have helped here.

I tried to read that in my Elseworlds kick a long time ago, but I barely got past the first few pages.
