"Return Of The Jedi" made a lot more sense to me after seeing the prequels--all that blather about "Your thoughts betray you" and "I can feel the good in you" and "turning to the dark side" made a lot more sense a couple of decades later when the prequels came along to put all of it into context for me.

Third option:
You watch Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, enjoying every minute, and just grit your teeth through the .... less than stellar stuff in Return of the Jedi.
Then you go to bed happy that you have almost a perfect trilogy, and no one ever came along later and tried to tell a prequel story.

I was just looking at some photos of Darth Maul and I have to agree, he looks like a cheesily painted sports fan whose team colors are red and black. I mean, it looks like paint - maybe if it looked more like tattoos or natural coloring somehow, but it just didn't. It probably would have been better had he kept his hood on and we only were allowed glimpses of his face.
