Manic Street Preachers' Nicky Wire writing 'Doctor Who' script
Manic Street Preachers' Nicky Wire has revealed he is writing a script for Doctor Who.
The bassist, writing on his blog at the band's website, Manicstreetpreachers.com, explained that he had set himself the task of writing an episode named 'Do Not Go Gently' for fun.
"The idea is centred around Dylan Thomas' last days in New York," he wrote. "Of course, it's going to have a massive fucking monster in it too."
The BBC or the show's current head writer Steven Moffat have yet to comment on whether they will accept Wire's effort when he completes it.
Award-winning author and self-described Doctor Who fanatic Neil Gaiman has confirmed rumours that he will pen an episode for a forthcoming season of the iconic British series.
Gaiman won best comic for his Batman comic Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? at the SFX Awards in Sussex, England, on Saturday and, in the acceptance speech he sent, revealed that the Doctor Who episode will air in 2011.
"As anyone who's read my blog knows, I'm a big fan of a certain long-running British TV series. One that I started watching — from behind the sofa — when I was three," Gaiman said.
He revealed that his episode — originally titled "The House of Nothing," but since changed — will air in approximately 14 months.
The new season of Doctor Who is set to debut in the U.K. in the spring, with Matt Smith debuting as the Time Lord. Gaiman's episode will air during Smith's second season in the title role.
In 2009, bestselling horror-fantasy master Gaiman won both the prestigious John Newbery Medal and his fourth Hugo science fiction award for the young adult novel The Graveyard Book.
The British-born, U.S.-based writer's credits range from adult novels like American Gods to his acclaimed children's tale Coraline to comics such as his Sandman series.

Re: Gaiman, this will hopefully be the first thing he's written that won't put me to sleep. although he does seem to get into fairy tales and he might be a good fit.
Don't know if you ever caught "The Ten Doctors" on youTube but it's quite good, a huge comic strip, nicely 'tooned and written featuring the whole gang. Quite a big project but very ambitious and recommended. And probably the only time we're apt to see such a thing....
Florence And The Machine frontwoman backed to appear in Doctor Who
Florence And The Machine singer Florence Welch has been backed to make an appearance in Doctor Who by the series' lead actor Matt Smith
The TV star recently admitted that he would love to see the flame haired frontwoman make a cameo in the sci-fi series one day reports the Press Association.
Asked whom he would like to see make an appearance, Smith said: "Florence from Florence And The Machine - I'd quite like her to do one."
The Doctor is accompanied across time by flame-haired assistant Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillan in the actual series.
He also said he would like former Manchester United forward Eric Cantona to make an appearance in the show at some stage.
Anytime Smith makes an off the cuff comment like that, it spirals into a new media blitz, even though he's basically just thinking out loud and he really doesn't have any power over casting....
And he's managed to work with every Doctor save for two in a Doctor Who production.
1st Doctor as a different character. 2nd-8th as the Brig (6th & 8th only in Big Finish audio adventures) 10th -- David Tennant played the new Brig in a Big Finish audio play that featured the old Brig teaming up with an alternate 3rd Doctor played by David Warner.

Matt Smith: 'Doctor Who will face his darkest days in new series' - TV News
Doctor Who star Matt Smith has said that The Doctor will face his "darkest days" in the new series.
A new behind-the-scenes featurette was unveiled at the weekend (April 2-3) at the WonderCon fan convention in San Francisco. Watch the clip by scrolling down and clicking below.
In it, Smith reveals that the new series will see the Timelord pushed further than he has ever been before. "I think The Doctor is going to face his darkest days," he said. "I've always wanted to explore the dark bit of The Doctor and take him to that place and get him placed in that situation were he has choices that are so drastic that they tear him apart."
He added: "The Doctor is having to face a very great and present and dangerous evil, and without giving too much away, he’s got a huge battle on his hands."
Smith also revealed that a secret that companion Amy Pond is forced to keep from him will put strain between the pair. "The Doctor's relationship with Amy Pond is going to change forever," he said.
Doctor Who returns to BBC One and BBC America on May 23 with a two-part story filmed in the United States.
The first block of episode titles for the new series of Doctor Who has been revealed.
The BBC's hit sci-fi drama returns on April 23, and details of the episodes have been kept a closely-guarded secret.
But now, with the series just weeks away, the titles have been revealed by Doctor Who Magazine.
The opening two-part story had already been confirmed as The Impossible Astronaut and Day Of The Moon, which was written by showrunner Steven Moffat and partially shot on location in Utah.
The third episode will be called The Curse Of The Black Spot, written by Steve Thompson and guest-starring Hugh Bonneville as a pirate captain.
Next in the run is the provocatively-titled The Doctor's Wife, penned by legendary writer Neil Gaiman and guest-starring Suranne Jones as a mysterious character named Idris.
There then follows another two-part story from Life On Mars writer Matthew Graham, named The Rebel Flesh and The Almost People.
The following week sees the mid-season finale, A Good Man Goes To War. The episode, written by Moffat, will end with a "massive, game-changing cliffhanger," after which the series will go off air for two months, returning for a further six episodes in the autumn.
I'm very much looking forward to this series and since BBCA is finally fully caught up, I don't even think I'll bother downloading. I'll wait a day and watch On Demand. A lot less commercials and no pop ups.
Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat has likened the new series to a "ghost train". The hit sci-fi drama is back for the sixth series since its revival next week (April 23), which insiders have claimed is the darkest to date. The opening two-part story was partially filmed on location in the US.
Now, writing in the Radio Times, head writer Moffat said: "Last year was a rollercoaster: Matt Smith's amazing new Doctor came bursting out of the TARDIS and tried every ride in the funfair - except one. It's time to step aboard the ghost train."
Hinting at what was to come in this year’s series, he continued: "By Lake Silencio, on the Plain Of Sighs, a story will begin and end. A good man is going to die, an impossible life wlll begin, and our heroes will set out on the long road to the deadliest secret in the universe - and when it stares you in the face, you might just discover you’ve known about it all along."
Doctor Who returns to BBC One and BBC America on Easter Saturday, April 23.
Doctor Who boss Stephen Moffat has hinted that John Simm could reprise his role as The Master in a future episode of the hit sci-fi drama. The head writer and showrunner discussed the future of the character at a recent screening of the show in New York, reports Digital Spy.
Simm had apparently told Moffat that the departure of tenth Doctor David Tennant would signal the end of his association with the programme.
However, Moffat added: "He [later] pulled me aside and said, 'I didn't mean that! Look at me, I'm fit, I'm okay!'"
The showrunner has also denied reports that Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch could be set to take on the role, commenting: "Benedict has to wait in line, probably".
Doctor Who returns to BBC One and BBC America on Easter Saturday, April 23.
Moffat recently likened the new series to a "ghost train" and has revealed one of the four main characters will die in the opening two-part episode.
Doctor Who star Matt Smith has admitted that the show is going all out to break America this year. For the first time the show, which returns to UK screens this week, is being broadcast on BBC America on the same day as BBC One (April 23). Its opening two-part story The Impossible Astronaut and Day Of The Moon has also been set and partially filmed on location in the US.
Promoting the series while in the US this week, star Matt Smith revealed that success in the country is a priority. He told the New York Post: "We want to get it to as many Americans as possible, because we're so proud of it."
Smith described the show by saying: "You'll never get bored with a baffled genius turning up and saving the day with a toaster and a ball of string and being chased by a giant robot that breathes fire and talks with the voice of a calculator, on a show that’s not bound by space, logic, time or genre."
Describing this uniquely British nature of alien hero The Doctor, Smith added: "He's everything James Bond isn't. I mean, he's been on his own for 900 years, apart from picking up really hot chicks and saving the world …[he's] really clever, but socially quite inept."
I doubt the Master will be back or if he is, maybe with a different actor in the role. As for Cumberbatch, I see him taking over the role of the Doctor after Smith leaves one day. seems like a natural. Simm did an okay job in the role but all the respective actors who portrayed the evil Time Lord pale in comparison to Roger Delgado and until they can get that mix just right again, I'd rather they stay away from the character anyway. Seems like Moffat would probably be continuing to steer the show in the direction of scares and monsters.
Absolutely loved the first episode. Smith continues to impress. There's a great scene between Rory and River. The monster is suitably creepy (and apparently there may have been clues to them last season). Have some theories on where this is heading, but I'll wait a bit before sharing them.
Also watched the Elisabeth Sladen tribute and actually teared up a bit.
We didn't get a tribute over here, unfortunately, just a quick blurb. Great opener for the season though. The kind of opener that seems to point toward possibly a bigger picture than even a one season arc....
