I'm enjoying this show. A friend of mine talked me into watching an episode of Project Runway. My thoughts were "It's awesome to watch the creative process of these people, but I don't understand or care about fashion. I wish they were working on art instead of fashion." Work of Art has a nice mix of artists. Everything from a Photoshop guy to people that are established artists. A range of ages too. I would've been pissed if it was twelve twentysomethings. (Warning: It's produced by Sarah Jessica Parker and she made a quick appearance in the first episode.) http://www.bravotv.com/work-of-art/season-1Quote: Bravo’s latest stroke on the reality canvas brings Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner Sarah Jessica Parker and her production , Pretty Matches, together with the Emmy-nominated Magical Elves (Top Chef, Project Runway ) and Eli Holzman, to produce Work of Art : The Next Great Artist, an hour long creative competition series among contemporary artists. Work of Art: The Next Great Artist will bring together fourteen aspiring artists to compete for a solo show at the prestigious Brooklyn Museum and a generous cash prize.
Hosting this colorful new series is art enthusiast China Chow. She will serve on the judging panel alongside art luminaries Bill Powers, a New York Gallery owner and literary art contributor, Jerry Saltz, current art critic for New York Magazine, and Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, esteemed curator and owner of Salon94 gallery. World-renowned art auctioneer Simon de Pury adds his voice of experience as a mentor to the contestants.
In each episode, contestants are faced with the challenge of creating unique pieces in a variety of mediums such as painting, sculpture, photography, collage and industrial design. The weekly assignments are exciting, original and will challenge the artists' to push the limits of their technical skills and creative boundaries. Completed works of art will be appraised by our panel of top art world figures alongside a new celebrated guest judge every week. Through a gallery showing at the end of each challenge, these industry select dictate which artists have successfully mastered the subject matter and creation of their piece, as well as whose concept leaves the greatest impact.
Work of Art: The Next Great Artist, is produced by Pretty Matches and Magical Elves for Bravo. Dan Cutforth, Jane Lipsitz, Sarah Jessica Parker, Alison Benson and Eli Holzman serve as executive producers.

Excellent! (Never mind the critics, SJP, you do good work.) Can I watch this show without having cable TV?

Bravo hasn't been promoting this show very much, which is sad because I like it very much. Ryan Shultz is my favorite contestant, but he doesn't seem to get a lot of air time. His portfolio of work is here: http://www.ryanshultz.com/gallery.html

What's interesting is to see what these guys (who are used to having unlimited time to create art) can do when given just a few hours to complete a project.

I'll give it one more shot just because I genuinelly respect you folks. But upon first viewing I mentioned to my wife how sad it is that this pretentious crap is called art while real artists, the guys who drew and draw comics, real pictures of real things, requiring real talent and discipline, are not held in the highest esteem, as I think they should be. But, as the saying goes, I don't know art, I just know what I like.

I like the way that the contestants on this show are so willing to assist each other in their creations. They all seem to be so supportive of each other. Nice.

My hatred of Miles the Douche knows no bounds. Tired of his dissing the other artists in front of the judges, tired of his tortured artist act, tired of his artist overcoming adversity bullshit. Tired of the entire douche package. No one stopped Miles as he almost nail-gunned himself repeatedly. Because he's a douche. Abdi's been the most talented guy from the start. They give him shit for being linear and commercial, which is shorthand for, "It's obvious that your art is good. Way too obvious. We want art that the masses would find less accessible."

I hate Miles so fucking much and every artsy asshat like him that make up most of the art world.
Abdi's my guy, but his "childhood" challenge entry totally sucked. He has to be one of the nicest, most positive contestants on any reality show ever.

Awesome finale! As usual, Miles' show wasn't about the art, it was about the process. In other words, it was bullshit. Abdi gave another awesome showing and got called out (once again) for being too literal. The best part...

Hells yeah. I enjoyed seeing Miles in "third place." (Spoiling this stuff is probably a waste of time. I think we're the only ones interested in this show. )

I try not to denigrate photography. I tend to oversimplify the process in my mind and dismiss it as a simple, technical art. But man... she bought already posed deer babies from a taxidermist and took their picture.
Her wax baby heads were cool though.

I'm so glad that his bullshit couldn't save him on this one. Abdi was smart to kick it old school.

Wow. That surprises me. I haven't even seen the first season in reruns. I just assumed the show was a bust.
