I kept hearing about this book, and was tempted to buy it because of the art by Gabriel (CASANOVA) Ba, but I was put off by the fact that it's written by Gerard Way, lead singer of the band My Chemical Romance. I was bored yesterday, so I finally broke down and bought the trade, and damn if it wasn't one of the coolest comics I've read.

In a nutshell (from the Dark Horse website)
Quote:
Once, the Umbrella Academy was unstoppable. Under the tutelage of their guardian and mentor, Dr. Reginald Hargreeves, its members spent their childhoods fighting evil and honing their extraordinary gifts.

Until something went terribly wrong.

Now, nine years later, the estranged members of the Umbrella Academy are reunited by the death of the only parent they've ever known and the rise of a new and terrible threat. Will they be able to overcome their history for long enough to save the world-one more time?

Conceived and written by Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance), Umbrella Academy features interior art by Eisner Award-nominated artist Gabriel Ba (De:Tales), colors by Eisner Award-winning colorist Dave Stewart, and covers by multiple-Eisner Award-winning painter James Jean (Fables).

You can read a preview here, but this is the book I'll be recommending for the next few months.

If you like CASANOVA, HELLBOY, or BPRD I think you'll enjoy it.

If Umbrella Acadamy has a school band, do they march in the Black Parade?

Well, fancy that: I just got my copy of this book in the post this morning. I too was put off by the writer's other career, but the buzz on the book and, above all, Grant Morrison's superlative endorsement made me take the plunge. I'll get back with my thoughts when I've gotten into it.

Even though I'm actually a FAN of MCR, I too was shying away from this. But based on your recommendations, I'll have to pick up the first trade.

I thought it looked very interesting, but the graphic violence turned me completely off.

It is graphic, true, though it's in an exaggerated, cartoon way. Probably wouldn't recommend it for the under 15 or 16 set.

I had been hearing good things about this book, but I've been waiting for an official IMWANian endorsement. Thanks Monk. I'll pick it up.

I have the trade, but haven't read it yet. Ba's turning into one of my favorites.

I've read the first two issues, and I'm not as impressed as I expected to be. Four more to go to change my mind.

Then I shall pick it up again.

By the way, I know you picked up Jason Aaron's first arc on Ghost Rider; how do you rate it?

I've been enjoying it. It's sort of a cheesy B (or Z) movie take on Ghost Rider, but it works for the character and is a lot of fun. I was a bit lost at first, since he picks up from the previous run, but picked things up eventually.

It hasn't reached the level where I think to recommend it, but it's enjoyable.

Got the trade out of the library and it is now on my list to purchase. Bent, twisted, scary, loving, hateful, dysfunctional, curious. I did enjoy it. Thanks, Monk, for putting it on my radar!

First issue is in the upcoming issue of Previews.

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY: DALLAS #1

Written by Gerard Way, art by Gabriel Ba, colored by Dave Stewart, covers by Ba and Jim Lee.

The Umbrella Academy has saved the world, but the house they were raised in is destroyed. One member is bedridden, the side of her head held together with tape; and another has lost her voice, the source of her power. Now that they've fulfilled their destiny, does the Umbrella Academy have any future at all? The Umbrella Academy returns for a second six-issue series -- Dallas, where we put the term-hero-to the test.

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on Nov. 26.
