It is SO wrong that it's Thanksgiving and neither Comedy Central NOR SyFy will be playing a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 marathon. :sigh:

I've never lived somewhere with cable TV, so I always find it weird when people talk about the shows and movies that get aired on certain holidays, as a tradition.
I was like, wait, they show The Wizard of Oz on Easter? Since when? Since Forever? huh.

In the mid-1990's, my boss was walking around the office asking what we were doing for Thanksgiving. I told her I was participating in a marathon. She was intrigued and wanted to know more, so I told her about the multi-day MST3K marathon on Comedy Central. I think she rolled her eyes  and moved on.

you could make a cut out of the guys and the row of chairs and glue it on the bottom of your tv.

Mike Nelson found a brilliant way to keep MST3K going---sort of---and give blockbuster movies the MST3K treatment that you never could on Comedy Central or SyFy. He realized that if he and his MST3K pals recording a commentary track to a movie---ANY movie----the Hollywood studios can't stop you from selling it SEPERATELY as an .mp3 file SEPARATE from the DVD. It's up to the customer to synch the track with the DVD, but they provide clues as to when to start and a character named "Disembodio" helps every so often by repeating a line of dialogue spoken by one of the characters in the film.

My only nitpick is that I wish that Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett would speak as their MST3K alter egos "Tom Servo" and "Crow T. Robot" instead of themselves. Also, it's jarring to see them riff against a movie that isn't a garbage C-movie, not just an A-movie, but a movie that SHOULD have won Best Picture! That's right---I bought the Riff-Trax to Christopher Nolan's Memento. Never realized until now that Leonard Shelby's REAL fear was that the shirts were coming after him...

http://www.rifftrax.com/

P.S. They also riff on traditional Grade-Z movies, and for them, they also sell DVDs with the commentary track included.

They wanted to do Plan 9, but they movie did not have enough gaps of dialogue to fit the show's format. There are a few Rifftrax on Hulu pre-synced to a few public domain movies including Night of the Living Dead and Reefer Madness.

RiffTrax's shorts are the funniest things they do.

They are not legally able to do that, as the characters are now owned by Jim Mallon.

No one has mentioned the other faction of MST3K folks, who are doing Cinematic Titanic (http://www.cinematictitanic.com/). It's Joel and Trace, plus J. Elvis Weinstein, Frank Conniff, and Mary Jo Pehl. They take a more traditional approach, producing DVDs in which they riff on B films. They also do live shows. Unfortunately they also can't use the MST3K characters.

I suspected that was the reason why. You know, it's funny--Bill Corbett does not sound like Trace, but when I hear him I hear "Crow." Just shows what a terrific job he did replacing him.

Wow, the original Tom Servo is part of that cast? I think I'm going to have to get one of their DVDs. I wonder. If they will do Attack of the Eye Creatures (a.k.a. "THEY JUST DIDN'T CARE!!!)?

Ha! Great stuff. My wife and I used to have piles of my college buddies over for hours and hours of MST3K. Good times.

I didn't realize you could trademark a silhouette of theatre seats, but apparently so. I saw a preview for the Cinematic Titanic version of Santa Claus Conquers The Martians and the five cast members are standing on tiers which do NOT resemble the famous MST3K theatre seats:

I would like to mash together MST3K's Martians with Cinematic Titanic's, fixing the overlap, and see how it plays.

Dammit! I didn't know they came to Chicago, I'd have made the trip.
