Art Out of Time: Unknown Comics Visionaries, 1900-1969, by Dan Nadel. Has anyone else read this book? It came out just a few years ago. I saw a copy while visiting another library and ended up getting it by interlibrary loan to see for myself recently.

It's an anthology of comics that samples the work of a number of obscure creators that Nadel considers unjustly neglected. There's Garrett Price's "White Boy" (A newspaper western I'd only seen a couple of tantalizing samples of before--beautiful art), a "Fat Fury" story drawn by Ogden Whitney, a bunch of weird and wonderful newspaper strips from the early years, and more. Most are funny, some are very off the wall, and a couple are just plain inexplicable. In one or two cases the examples shown here are pretty much all that survives of a strip that may have appeared in only a single newspaper.

Anybody who's at all interested in the history of comics--or just wants to see the work of some truly different artists--should take a look at this.

I'd also direct your attention to a companion book,Art In Time,by the same author. This one features unjustly neglected artists in the comic book field, along with more famous ones like Bill Everett and Mort Meskin.

I've always loved Bill Everett's stuff...he was doing in the '40s what other artists didn't do until the '60s. Clean, angular, and distinctly his. Wildly underrated/neglected artist.

That's the title I was trying to remember! I knew he had written another one.
