I'm not one for changing night to nite and through to thru, but I really thought the ship had sailed on the word donut and have been spelling the word that way as long as I can remember. I just noticed today that Firefox's spell check wants me to spell it doughnut. I cannot remember the time before today seeing it spelled that way. Doughnut. I don't even like the look of it. I think I'll pass.

I use the spelling doughnut with out even thinking. Donut is from the spelling of Dunkin' Donuts. And a common variation.

Let's resolve this by referring to scripture:

Good southern boy that you are, you think of Krispy Kremes, which makes sense. However for the majority of my life, I got them from either Bob's Donuts and Chicken in Lorain Ohio, Sweet Creme Donut Shop in Elyria Ohio, or Pat's Donuts & Kreme in Lima Ohio. I am just really, really surprised that the computer dictionary doesn't accept that as correct.

"Donut" doesn't look right to me, although I've used that spelling when I've been in a hurry. I really prefer "doughnut."

It's unlikely that the AP Style Book will change the spelling anytime soon: Doughnut. Unless it's a proper name, like Dunkin' Donuts.

If you spell it "donuts," you can't do the hilarious joke of calling them "dog-nuts."
