and why?

I'm imagining the era somewhere between the 1920s and the early 1960s.

Bill Cosby. The undisputed king of 1960s comedians.

Cosby is definitely a good pick.

Groucho Marx is good for old times.

Image

Hilarious in the Marx Brothers movies, but also amusing later on with his game show and other appearances.

Groucho for me too. He's so quick-witted in the movies.

This. But I would love to see more of Buster Keaton, those movies seem visually ingenious.

I was Groucho for Halloween. The only other actual person I' ve "been" besides me in fifteen years, since that mad scientist was just totally off the cuff...

George Burns. I just find him hilarious.

Groucho. I like Harpo and Chico too, but Groucho's wit and wordplay make him my top pick.

These are all good choices. I'm not sure that I have an absolute favorite, but I am
leaning Groucho for the win. I also like Buster Keaton, Stan Laurel (before Hardy),
and W.C. Fields has his moments, too.

But, if I look at my video collection, it's obvious. Of those listed above, I have only
the Marx Brothers on DVD.

Groucho, followed closely by Henny Youngman.

I'm a sucker for the one-liners. My favorite modern comics are Mitch Hedberg and Steven Wright.

That said, I also LOVE Shelley Berman. He invented the One-Sided Phone Conversation schtick that Bob Newhart (great as he is) stole shamelessly.

In recent years, Shelley has played Larry David's dad on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

And apparently so in real life as well. Groucho for me as well. Harpo a close, close second.

Do the Stooges count? If so, that's my answer.

If not, Jerry Lewis especially with Dean Martin.

A lot of good choices have already been mentioned. I will add:
Jack Benny.
Fibber McGee and Molly.
Dick Van Dyke.

And I will man up and admit I really like Lucille Ball.

Lucy was pretty good. I have to admit though, her "cry/fake sobbing" really wears on me, though.

I'd probably have Cosby ranked 2nd but I don't think of him as old-time for some reason.
