I grew up with what was essentially the superhero version of Captain America. He was a virtual Boy Scout who would never kill, never used a gun, and dressed in what was unquestionably a superhero costume. Despite that, I loved Bryan Hitch's redesign in the Ultimates, and even more I loved Brubaker's more militaristic take on the character in his own book. Which do you prefer?

The Ultimates version really hooked me. I considered it the central hook of the book.

I think the Marvel movies would have worked better if the Avengers movie had essentially been the debut of the Captain America character. I like him best (now) as "World War 2 soldier who's still figuring things out as first major adventure unfolds."

In fact, the plot of the first Ultimates should have basically been the Avengers movie, including the Ultimate style Cap.

Are they mutually exclusive?

I say "No".

I have no interest in a Captain America who stops muggings and bank heists: he should be about America. He should be involved in big time international terrorist conspiracy spy type stuff, which puts him on the side of the soldier. But those terrorists and conspirators and spies should be with comic book threats like the Red Skull, AIM and Hydra, not Gaddafy, bin Laden and al Queda, so that puts him back on the side of the superhero.

What about a Cap who's more of a secret agent -- America's 'James Bond', if you will. Nick Fury is "M" and Tony Stark is "Q" (or whatever).

I think I like current Steve Rogers best of all, where he's essentially Nick Fury.

The current Steve Rogers is indeed very cool. he is the reason I enjoy Secret Avengers and Captain America so much.

I gave up on Captain America long ago because of all the politics that kept appearing in the stories.

Given his origin, emphasizing the "soldier" aspect of him would make a certain amount of sense.

Both.

I think the Stern, Byrne, Rubinstein version was perfect. The right mesh of Super Hero with the focus and sense of duty of a soldier.
