The title says it all. While reading another thread, it occurred to me that the Hulk is a very useful character to have in your universe. This is separate from the idea of whether he's good for a monthly title, or a superhero, or anything like that.

Depending on the story (and the needs of the story), he's

1. Beowulf -- the supernatural warrior who is called upon and unleashed against a threat that we can't hope to stop without him

2. Grendel -- the bull in the china shop, causing trouble for reasons of his own. Not a schemer, just a an incredibly strong breaker who requires that you bring in the big guns to control him;

3. Grendel's Mother -- the retributive rage force, all powerful and and enraged because something he loves (or kind of likes) has been killed. (Note, not the Angelina Jolie one with the golden butt).

A couple of years ago I picked up DC's Beowulf from the 70s in the bargain bin and thought it was a great book. I thought that DC should bring the character into the present DC Universe as their counter for Thor and I understand that DC did just that in a recent issue of Wonder Woman.

And I like the "Man's Best Friend" slogan under Hi-Jinks's avatar.

While I perhaps agree with the analysis, the Hulk just bores me to tears.

Jay's insights often impress me, and leave me pondering things. This is one such insight.

My all-time fave was the time Jay wrote that Don Quixote was "the first fanboy". That was cool.

Did you ever read the one where he smashes stuff? It's awesome.

Maybe if he dressed Rick Jones up in tiny green undies?

Hmm, no. The Hulk would still bore me to tears.

He's also the ultimate monster mix-tape, taking the best aspects of the great ones --

Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde's Duality
Frankenstein's Dim-Witted & Misunderstood Monster
King Kong's Destructive "Force of Nature" Power +
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Da Hulk

So you came back madly in love with Hulk?

I think you honeymooned wrong.

I have no memory of starting this thread or writing that Beowulf Grendel stuff.
