This one's up there with Batman absolutely refusing to kill as The Joker murders another hundred innocent victims. A pretentious, misguided view of the concept of heroism from writers who are as self-serving as the way they portray the characters.

I agree with Doot, mostly. Truth is, the first one seemed a little fast, I find it hard to believe someone would give up on committing suicide so quickly. Although in fairness, Superman showing up would probably be a nice budge in the right direction. The second one was too long and chocked full of pretentious expository dialogue. My biggest problem with the second one was Superman hanging around and not stopping any other crime.

Each of them has their flaws and strengths, although I'd say the All Star one is slightly better.

I think it was hackish of JMS to write Superman talking a girl out of suicide so soon after the A*S scene.

Well, when the Joker was first around and killed people, Batman ALSO killed people. The Batman's '60s code against killing went along with a kindler, gentler Joker. Then, when the Joker went murderous again and Batman kept his code, it stopped making sense.

It only makes sense in the context of, say, the Animated universe where the Joker (or any other villains) don't routinely murder, and when one does (like in Mask of the Phantasm) it's a Really Big Deal.

The implicit premise here seems to be that if Superman saved her against her will she'd just get mad and then go right back and try it again. But from what I've read, people who survive an attempt at suicide are very unlikely to try it again. And people who don't have easy-seeming means close to hand are less likely to try in the first place (That's one argument for railing in prominent jump areas like the Golden Gate Bridge to make them jump-proof). If the character had jumped from the building and Superman had saved her, in all likelihood the shock of coming so close to dying would've served as a wake-up call. And THEN she would have been ready to listen to reason.

A real-life rescuer would have had no choice but to use persuasion, of course, because the Superman catch wouldn't have been an option. But Superman doesn't have that limitation, and his quick-and-dirty rescue method would probably have worked just as well.
