Garcia-Lopez. You can leave out the "besides"; he's the best Superman artist, period.

Of those listed, I chose Jose Garcia-Lopez. I'd like to write in Steve Rude though.

Oh yeah, he'd have been good. I put in the "that other dude" option for write-ins.

I voted for "that other dude". Swan is so far ahead of second place for me, it hardly even matters whom I'd pick.

Garcia-Lopez drew Superman 347, page four of which is my favorite Superman page ever. The writing is crap, but the artwork is phenomenal. I'm too lazy to scan it though.

Oh! I should have said "Hanzo when he wears the costume"!

Yeah, this is essentially "my Superman" -- the Superman I grew up with.

That said, I voted for Shuster -- I really love the squinty, Clint Eastwood eyes and the rough look of the costume he did. There was something primal and essential about his rendition -- like it was beamed directly from the collective imaginations of all the insecure boys and men of the world.

Discovering Jose Luis Garcia Lopez was like finding Neal Adams all over again.

I don't know what it is, but Lopez's work isn't really exciting to me -- I get a warm, nostalgic glow when looking at his 80's DC stuff, but I'm not overwhelmed with "Holy shit!" when I see it.

James, when you add a new entry to the poll choices, it wipes out the votes cast so far.

That's how Rahm Emanuel got elected.

It was between Shuster and Schaffenberger for me.

I've enjoyed more Schaffenberger stories than Shuster, but if you held a gun to my head and forced me to pick the real Superman, it would be Shuster's.

(My "off the poll" answer would be Wally Wood drawing in the Joe Shuster style. That stuff's just amazing.)

And I don't know why I don't get Garcia Lopez. He's just too perfect for me. It hits me as an advertising artist drawing comics. It's a fault of mine, I know, but it keeps me from getting too excited about most of his work.
