SpectreMan lasted one season, and is mostly just has a cult following.
The Ultra Franchise is over 40 years old, and is still a powerful money making steamroller, with movies, TV shows, toys, etc etc.

There can be only one answer:

I used to hide behind the chair when Rodak came on during Space Giants, hahah

It's been equally long since I saw any of 'em: 32 years.

Strangely, while I recall loving a particular faceless Spectreman villain and its theme song (( have also never found the theme song in English that I remember), I've got to go with Ultra...on the basis of Hugh's toy photos, which are a scream.

I remember some of the lyrics from Spectreman:

Hero, from outer space
He'll save the human race
Yet we'll never know the face
of SPECTREMAN!

In a flash, Like a flame,
Faster...Than a Plane,
Mystery...Is the Name
of SPECTREMAN!

I loved that theme. And that the baddies were freakin' gorillas! But, Ultraman's costume looked so much cooler. Goldar transforming into a rocket, living in a volcano, and the creepy villian made Spacegiants cool.

Yes that is the one, Nagoo!!! Somehow I kept finding the Japanese original but still remembered this one from seeing it all summer when I was five. Yes, I used to play "Space Giants" out in the yard; I was ga-ga for Japanese live action...I remember being fascinated by the SG bad guys turning into a pile of black ooze upon "death"...then there was a cartoon about a recalcitrant hero in a red body suit and white helmet who could do those speed-line filled leaps that I saw maybe one time and started figuring out how to rip off the look I remembered for an epic space opera 25 issue imaginary run played out in the backyard as well...yes, Lucius has a nice long box of my imaginary comics in Dream.

Only one of the bunch I ever actually saw, and that was just once, when I was quite young. My little brother thought it was awesome, IIRC.

Funny---I keep remembering this thing to which I refer as a cartoon, but that's so similar to what I describe you have to wonder! Looks pretty good!!

I love all those old shows. My buddy and I used to goof on Spectreman the most though, especially the way Dr Gori always made these wild gestures when he talked. And Karas because of the way he mumbled. I can still call him up today and mumble wildly and crack him up.

One of the other things we used to think was odd, was the Overlords. The monster would attack, and George would be prevented from becoming Spectreman because os some such lesson, or excuse the Overlords would give him, Then after the beast wreck half the city and kills a bunch of people, THEN they'd let him transform!

Thanks guys, half of Osaka is destroyed, but George has learned humility! Good job!

Hugh--

Is there any fan art of Ultraman and Spectreman fighting? You know, mixing properties like that? I looked and couldn't find any.

That IS of course the one I remembered!!! Thanks!!! It's even...almost as cool as I remembered...which I didn't expect! And it sounds like "Pinball Wizard" with some post Lifehouse [b]Quadrophenia[/b sound FX added. Now, I'll go back and watch the whole thing...I lived near NO other kids when it came out on WTBS syndication, so I'll just pretend I WANdered over to your house :-D

I also recall him throwing a type of shuriken...but some reason I pictured his torso as blue. Maybe a personal preference? WTBS played Ultra and Spectre both in 1979; I watched them in Newnan, GA (home of Alan Jackson, yee-haw).

Of course, the one Japanese show/series that everybody is forgetting:

The Kamen Rider franchise has been continually active since the very first show back in 1971. They currently have a series running now, and a couple of theatrical features have just been released.

These guys definitely kick ass and take names!
