Did you ever pick up a comic, convinced you would hate it and ended up loving it? For me there were three I can recall. Starman, by James Robinson, Young Avengers and Ultimates Volume 1.

Starman and YA, when I saw the covers, thought they would be too cool for school and was so pleasantly surprised when I read them and Ultimates I thought I would really hate and ended up loving 90% of it.

Anyone else?

I thought it was one of the lamest concepts I'd ever heard, and it turned out to be one of my favourite series of the '00s.

The Superman series "World of Krypton" where he's a security chief on that New Krypton. Mahoney recommended it, and I found it surprisingly good. It was by James Robinson, which is what got me to try it.

I tend to hate that kind of big, temporary gimmick. But it was good because Kal-El's true heroism got to shine amongst a bunch of Kryptonian supermen.

Maybe Great Lakes Avengers, the miniseries by Dan Slott? I don't think I had huge expectations for it -- possibly because I knew they were a Byrne creation. But it ended up being one of most laugh-out-loud funny comics I'd read in a while. And the jokes at Milwaukee's expense were all pretty brilliant.

Miracleman by Alan Moore. I had flipped through the first trade and put it back down. I ended up buying it a few weeks later cause its Alan Moore :) and It blew me away.

Starman, for me too, for pretty much the same reasons.

Agreed re. The Ultimates. Part of it was from hearing and blindly accepting the huge vitriol heaped upon it at the JBF.

I would cast another vote for Young Avengers. The concept really sounded stupid, but Heinberg's writing was great.

I was also shocked and surprised that I'm liking Bendis latest Avengers work.

Why, no All-Star Batman love, people?

Hulk 156, 158, and any mid-70's Hulk comic I've enjoyed lately
Young Avengers: what a lucky thing to borrow! Yes, a favorite of recent years.
Blue Beetle, too!

The 2nd time I read Alpha Flight 1-4 (especially 2-4) because upon finally sitting down with all four recently, I
was left indifferent, but then I tried them a month later and got into them. I like Puck but he did not seem like a credible Alphan at all early on.

:ducks:

I'm sure I had others, but they tend to happen upon borrowing, not buying, and I haven't had access to any friendly collections in some time. But the dime boxes and quarter boxes (REMEMBER?!? i got a fine ASM #145 that way and more) let me take some chances that would add to the list I'd think up upon reflection. (Most everythin from DC by the time I crossed over in '89 or so!)

I liked a lot of the early Ultimate X-Men.

I'd have to add Young Avengers too. Easily one of my favourite books of the last decade. Very much enjoyed the Blue Beetle series as well.

Well, I avoided Starman for well over a decade because of that attitude. But with so many people calling it the "great one ever" I decided to give it a look anyway. I don't typically pick up random books without any recommendations from others if I don't think I'll like them either. :) I think most people are the same.

Astonishing Wolf-Man... just thought the title and character seemed lame. I think it's a really solid book, though.

I couldn't get behind the initial premise, but really enjoyed it (and still do). Funny thing is, the initial premise hasn't been touched on since the very beginning!

Cerebus - who'd have thunk that I'd love a comic about a sword-swinging aardvark?

Me too! A truly great series with such likable characters. It's shame it's not an ongoing with the original team and Cheung is the bomb!!

I'm not as close-minded as people make me out to be. I really loved this book, especially Volume 1 when it felt more like the real world. Marvel's conceit in the 60s was it was not set in fictional cities but it was supposed to be the real world, our world. And to me, it lost some of it's charm when it went away from the days the Hulk fought tanks. The supposed idea for the Ultimate Universe was to start over for a new generation and this series, as much as I didn't think the Ultimate universe was necessary, nailed it.

The art helped for sure, as you can see in the NY battle, it felt like you were watching a movie. The rendition of Cap was the best i have seen in years. When he sits in that diner, and hears people laughing and making jokes about hitting a woman, that scene subtly captured the man out of time PERFECTLY and why he's so great. And when he goes to kick his ass, and makes him become a giant FIRST, was one of my favorite scenes in comics.

Except for the Hollywood pandering and the Hulk rape talk, I loved it.

Yes to Thunderbolts too!!

And Dan Jurgen's Booster Gold. Didn't think I'd hate it but never imagined I'd like it so much.

It's funny how even when you like something I still disagree with every word you say.
