Help me out here, y'all. The wife watched X-Men: First Class with me and really liked it, and wants to read about how the X-Men got started, in comic form. She's reading the Lee/Kirby Essential, but I'm wondering if I should try something else. Should I track down the Steve Rude book, X-Men: Children of the Atom? Is there a more recent origin that's well done in comics?

I wanted her to go straight to All New, All Different X-Men, but she wanted the beginning.

Make sure that she reads The Hidden Years and Deadly Genesis between the original X-Men run and the All New, All Different X-Men.

Paul Jenkins has a bunch of good Origin stories in a series called Mythos including X-men

There was also X-men Origins One Shots these for the individual guys

Not as good as mythos, but most were entertaining

Isn't Marvel doing a whole new line of graphic novels featuring these heroes' origins?

Children of the Atom was alright, I don't think Rude finished it though, someone else had to pencil the last few issues(Rude did issues 1-3, Paul Smith did issue 4, Essad Ribic did issues 5&6).

I just skimmed through the Children of the Atom books. Prof X's eyebrows are scary in the first few Steve Rude issues.

"Children of the Atom" is a great one to read if you want a coherent "origin" story for the Silver Age team. It hits all the thematic points and then leads right into the Lee/Kirby X-Men #1.

Anyone ever read the Professor Xavier and the X-Men series?

http://www.comicvine.com/professor-xavi ... n/49-5553/

When I looked at the Children of the Atom books they were in the same box. I have no memory of ever buying or reading them. From a quick skim of a few issues it looks bad, really really bad.

Just tell her to find something worthwhile instead of the X-Men.

:ohyes:

The whole Doom Patrol=X-Men/Fantastic Four=Doom Patrol thing really gets Hanzo going.

I just don't get it. They're both led by a guy in a wheelchair... and that seems to be it as far as similarities between the X-Men and the Doom Patrol go.

Meanwhile, the Doom Patrol? The scientist leader that formed the team? The flying energy guy? The big orange brute trapped in a body he hates? The attractive young girl who doesn't even want to be a superhero?

Sound familiar?

There are a couple other Patrol/X-Men similarities, but I still find your points persuasive and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
